Postage Stamp

The Postage Stamp quilt might need its name changed to “Patchwork Insanity” LOL but it is coming along and I like the way it looks – it is going to keep growing even if I take a break on it now and then.  Yesterday I sewed all the units  that I had finished minus one that I had together and it made a 39 inch square – should have been 40 inches but it needed squaring up like usual.  Which I really and truly do not mind doing.  I laid it on the floor as the white blends into the design wall so much that some of you all didn’t know I had blocks sewed together and thought the strips of color were by themselves on the wall!  I think I will keep doing these and every 16 that I get sewed put them together in a large block  and add to this.  This is a great way to use up little pieces – my cutting is not accurate all the time and this is not meant to be a perfect quilt, there are variations on widths of the final white strip at the top and bottom of each block – this doesn’t bother me – it will add to it’s charm.  Yes these are 1.5 inch pieces of scrap fabric that make up these blocks – in rows of 10.  I am linking to Mrs Sew and Sow today, Sew Fresh Quilts, Freshly Pieced, and My Quilt Infatuation where I just won a give away – thank you Kelly.

This much of Floral Fantasy quilted on Monday night.

I can never get used to excessive packaging when it comes to quilting supplies – after the wire broke on one of my last extra fine needle threaders that work great on my tiny quilting needles I knew I needed to order more and found the best price this time from Colonial Threads this little plastic envelope of 4 threaders came in this big envelope.  Oh well – it arrived quickly and that is what counts I guess.

Here is a section of the newest quilt I am playing with – I cut a charm package in half, added some whites and a couple other pink/salmon colors from the stash – I’m not sure how big it will be – I am hand piecing it.

A close up so you can see the varieties in the light background.  Most likely a table topper or baby girl quilt.

A lizard visiting on the porch.  This is a very common one for Arkansas.

Hope you all had a good weekend and week to come.

Last day for the Craftsy Sale – ends at midnight – supplies and classes.

Cute little lizard ! 🙂 The postage stamp really grew or looks bigger once sewn together. Floral Fantasy is so much fun to see being quilted : ) I love those shades of pink and salmon, coral etc in the new project.

I love your postage stamp quilt – a variation on something that could be too simple. Love your new project too. I did one of those with some Liberty left overs I had. Again, a satisfying small project – and one that I actually kept!

Your new hand piecing project sure would make a delightful little baby quilt! When your Postage Stamp quilt is all done, I’m sure that no one will see the little idiosyncrasies. And you’re right, it will be just part of its charm. We rarely see any lizards here, but we see a lot in Hilton Head. I guess we’re too far north.

I really like the postage stamp quilt. Such tiny pieces but such great impact.

Love the postage stamp blocks! This will be an awesome quilt! The white sashing really makes the scrappy pieces show up, so they don’t just blend into each other…great look!
The new hand piecing project is looking good….love the fabric colors!

Those lizards ghoul me out but Chris has convinced me that they are beneficial so now I only go nuts when one gets in the house. I had one by the mosaic wall but the little bugger was elusive. It took Chris about an hour to finally catch it. Mostly waiting for it to come out from behind the sink. I was a total nut job about it. I know he thought more than once to catch me and toss me out the basement door!

Wow! I really like your postage stamp block. It is going to be a great quilt. Lots of other great eye candy to view. Thanks!

We can tell you love your ‘Patchwork Insanity’ quilt regardless. Isn’t it funny what makes us happy!

Always a delight to come and see what you are up to, Karen! That patchwork insanity sure has tiny pieces…. But waste not, want not. It’s looking good!

Love what is coming together with the pink charm pack. So simple yet very striking.

That postage stamp quilt is a cool cool idea.

Wow! Love the postage stamp quilt. I’m always on the lookout for a good scrappy project, and this is definitely a good one.

Love your go with it attitude with the postage stamp blocks/quilt.
Your lizard looks weird to me I’ve never seen a striped one here we have “blue belly” lizards
The quilt you are hand quilting seems to be going very quickly
The new coral/pink one is lovely too

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we are having a heat wave triple digits in the whole area. I don’t have air conditioning at my house and it’s really not uncommon to not have it in our area in our homes. There are also many businesses who just use open doors to air condition. No breeze at all last night. We do have “cooling stations” that’s places that will allow people to just come and stay to be out of the heat. That’s what I did for a while I just took advantage of the library cooling station. Now I am at the “cafe” area of our local grocery store. While it is un bearably hot there are no fires in our area and no wind if one starts.

What delightful quilts you are making. I really like the first one – perhaps because I have a bunch of scraps to use up.

  • Charlotte Sep 10, 2015 @ 10:55

Karen, you know I would love the postage stamp top since I work so much with scraps. I saw an interesting take on something similar on the Connecting Threads website this morning. It is in the patterns addition of the first page.

Love your take on a postage stamp quilt. Very graphic!

  • Karen Thurn Sep 10, 2015 @ 20:49

I love your postage stamp quilt. That’s a new layout idea I’ll have to try after I get done with my 1.5″ postage stamp quilt that I’m presently working on. I have lots of little sewing and matching of corners and that’s why I like your idea. I’m making squares of 8 x8 and including one 2.5 inch square somewhere inside it to add interest and because I’m running out of 1.5 inch squares.

Great job on the hand pieced quilt. Lovely fabric. I’m not a fan of lizard of any kind. I know they are good for the garden and I prefer that they stay there. Lol

  • Little Black Cat Sep 11, 2015 @ 18:41

The little hearts in the charm pack are precious, I love them! And your postage stamp quilt is awesome, I can\’t believe those pieces are that tiny! Awesome job! 🙂

Hi Karen, have just noticed your Postage Stamp Quilt and wondered if there is a pattern of it that I can purchase please?
It is so clean and bright looking and the white sashings just set it off in a lovely way.
I have seen other Postage stamp quilts but they look too busy and seeing I am a virgo (and like things in an ordered manner) I would dearly like to try your one and get me ‘stash’ looking a bit more in control….if that will ever happen!!!!
    many thanks
    Yvonne
