This hexie quilt seems to be flying along and I have to keep reminding myself it is because it is small not because I am super quilter LOL – almost to the half way already – roll it down once more and I might be reaching that magical half way point green hexie.
Handful of Scraps – the area quilted on Saturday night and more was done last night.
A little more applique on Morning Glory was done – I actually sat down to work on this two times yesterday thinking maybe I could finish this whole section you see here – but it was not to be – no rush! These are supposed to be acorns but mine are looking more like rose buds. To answer a few questions – no I do not use a fusible. I cut my piece out with a seam allowance – I trace around my template in either white mechanical pencil or mechanical pencil thin lead – that will be my turn under seam – I then glue baste to the background – no I do not use a plastic overlay. What I do it iron in crease marks on the background fabric and then by looking at the photo and following the crease marks I position my piece and then using Roxanne Glue Baste It with the very skinny eye I use tiny drops of glue to hold the piece in place. Roxanne Glue well hold the piece in place but you can still gently tug you piece up if you need to and re position.
30 Bird Blocks are now cut out – now I can sit and relax and maybe do some chain piecing to get more up on the wall? When done I will have 44 blocks and I will sit and measure and look it over and see if I want to make more. I did get my table straightened back out so I will have a neat area to start piecing today. All the white fabric folded and back in the treasure box, all fabric will be kept there until I decide if more blocks well be made. I think I will be laying one block out at a time on the table organized so I can do section by section and join them all together assembling one block at a time. If I want some of these birds to face opposite directions there is just one white piece I believe that I would have to cut a new one of – – the piece the beak is on – all of these whites are white on white or beige on white so I would not be able to reverse the piece and use the back like you can with batiks. We will find out if I am right – they might all end up facing the same way from here on out!

Your projects are really coming along. Your design wall in the last post looks amazing, nearly a whole wall of fabric goodness!
Once I get busy making the bird blocks I will have to remove some things from the wall for a while so I have room to organize them into a good layout
Your quilting is moving quickly on this one 🙂
I think that too and really it is a small quilt so I know it won’t take near as long – but it is moving – 21 hours of quilting over 2 weeks
I admire your ability to do such lovely hand quilting. The hexie quilt looks so soft and cuddly and I love the old-fashioned vibe of it.
thanks – I tend to go more towards old fashion but with a little twist of modern to some with the colors – I collect some that are more in the reproduction lines but not a lot
Such a great idea to cut out the pieces for so many bird blocks at once! Now the construction will definitely go quickly! What size are they ending up to be? Handful of Scraps is moving along, too! Even though it isn’t as big as you usually make, there is a lot of hand stitching in this one – such an accomplishment!
these bird blocks will be about 7 inches before I add any kind of sashing to them – I am planning to have all the birds standing on a “branch” a piece of brown sashing. The rows will be staggered I think so it might look more like they are standing on a branch slighter higher or lower than the one next to them
Looking forward to seeing some new birds join the existing birds in your post tomorrow… since you have them all cut out… I had pondered whether you had cut them out different ways too! lol
I love how your hexi quilting is going 😀
Kathi
LOL – I have two more birds made this morning but I ran into a problem when I realized I cut the beaks and the white piece they go to out wrong – luckily too big – but I’m trying to get it figured out so that the beak stays pointed and not chopped off in the seam giving it a square beak tip – I think I have it figured out – luckily with these blocks you can fudge here and there and they can all be different!
Your hexies are quilting up nicely! Those are still a “one day” project for me. Another question about your beautiful applique (love the batiks!): do you know if when you glue baste with the Roxanne’s, will it hold if you let the project sit for a while? I often set my hand work projects aside so if I had basted a block, would it keep or does it need to be worked up ASAP?
yes the glue holds – sometimes I will glue in place and work on it awhile and might not touch it again for a month or more and it is always still there in place! Now glue sticks on the other hand do not stay in place for me very well, they work for EPP but I have not had a lot of luck with them for applique the pieces always come loose for me
Oh yes you ARE Super Quilter! You need a T shirt that says that. 🙂
thanks Rebecca!
