Yesterday I was pressing fabric and then pressing more fabric – it seems to never get done! I had batting cut that needed to be fused together to make a big enough piece for the child size quilt that I am donating to charity. So I got that done and then pressed the yellow backing. It is now ready today to sew the two strips together to make the back and then I can sandwich the quilt and this week perhaps start to machine quilt it. Here is the quilt in case you do not remember it
And this yellow will be the backing
And I pressed the black batik for the Brimfield Awakening background – I found a lot of flaws in the batik design I’m sad to say and I will need to test out each square before I cut to make sure the piece doesn’t have flaws where I can’t hide it. I have this 16.5 inch square ruler (the squares are to be 15”) so I should be able to slide it around ok on the fabric and cut out where I can and try to not waste much. Overall I should be able to get enough out of the fabric that I have to use. Mostly I just want to make sure it is not in the center of the wreaths were it would be the most noticeable.
I tried to take some photos of the flaws but the camera didn’t want to pick it up well it is a little blurry but you can see how the dye (paint?) seems to be smeared here. Maybe all the dots caused the camera to not want to focus properly?
and this one for sure – I will try to cut my squares around these kind of areas or have it so that the applique will be over it. This fabric was in a kit bought last year and first inspected now so nothing I can do about it and from reading the reviews on the fabric now I think all of it was flawed!
Tumalo Trails from Monday night
This Wednesday I am linking to Sew Fresh Quilts:Let’s Bee Social — Jo’s Country Junction — Midweek Makers #118 — My Quilt Infatuation —

I always so admire your work. I just don’t know how you accomplish so much. Your Brimfield Awakening Block is gorgeous! And look how far you’ve gotten on your Tumalo Trails. Amazing! Hope you can make that black batik work for you.
well I do have plenty right now that is not finished – but I hope I can keep on finishing some while I start others. I have to get busy and quilt more birds for Melanie’s quilt and might actually take a little time away from the big quilt frame in order to do that
Been a while since I checked in and you are making great progress. My azalea haven’t bloomed yet. Yours are beautiful.
Funny how great minds think, I had a month ago purchased her star Brimflied awakening, from the two that one I was drawn too but haven’t started it yet but after seeing yours it makes me wanting too. But heaven knows I have enough going on right now, so I’ll enjoy watching you.
I am surprised I hadn’t seen the pattern Brimfield Awakening until just a month ago
I’m so sorry about the batik being flawed, hope you can work around it. Your quilting design with your stitches is so pretty. I love the yellow backing for the charity quilt, so pretty and colorful. Ironing is not any fun but necessary, I guess. Today a little 2 hour trip to drop off my grandson so he can take his girlfriend to a prom and than some shopping with my daughter since we’re there. A nice day here but cold this morning because a cold front went thru.
yes I think I can work around the flaws on the batik – hope I can get enough blocks cut out. have fun visiting with your family today – chilly here – 33 last night didn’t freeze and only 50’s today
That is too bad about your background batik being flawed, but good that you can cut around it or cover it up with applique. Pressing backing fabric and basting a quilt is my least favorite part of the process, but I think I’ll be doing that for a quilt in the next couple of days. At least that means quilts are moving forward!
I guess if I had a huge ironing surface it would go better but using a regular size ironing board and doing backings isn’t fun is it. but yes that means the quilt is moving forward – well be glad to get the charity quilts behind me
Your Brimfield block is gorgeous; what a stunning quilt it will make. Too bad the background has flaws and you can’t return it. I hate it when that happens.
I never thought to open the package when I got it as I hadn’t intended on making it right away and you could see all the colors just fine in the zippered plastic bag it came in. Then I decided to not make the quilt pattern it came with but to save the fabric for something else and this one came up – serves me right for not inspecting it = but I got it at such a great discount I probably would have kept it anyhow
I sure hope you can work around those flaws. Your Brimfield block is so pretty! I’ve been tempted to try that one, but I have too many other projects togged up. When I take a photo with my phone and it won’t focus, it helps if I pull the phone back just a bit, then wait for it to focus. Not sure if that would help.
I don’t usually use my phone for photos I use my little camera a lot – I was able to cut out 12 blocks of the black so unless I find more it will be a wall hanging
What a nuisance that the black fabric is flawed, but you seem to be sure you can work around the problem.
I managed to get 12 – 15inch blocks cut – big enough for a good size wall hanging
That’s a bummer about the fabric flaws. I hope you can successfully cut around them without wasting too much fabric. Good luck!
I didn’t waste too much and got the 12 blocks that I needed – wouldn’t have minded getting 16 but 12 will do just make a little smaller. The left over bits well get used.
