Really not a lot left to quilt when you think of how big this quilt is (104″ square) and that I started to quilt it 5 months ago (took one month off) – I am down to the last bits now – this taken on Friday night after I rolled it down. Tumalo Trails: More of this will be worked on today for Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy.
Saturday’s mail brought the rest of my gray squares that I was waiting for and my batting for Fall Harvest which will go on the frame next.
So I went through all the squares and selected 20 for my Round We Go stars and then I pinned my red/white fabric on the design wall and pinned the squares on top of it to create the look of sashing so I could see if it was what I wanted. It is! This is the look I was going for – this well not be the final layout – this was just getting them up on the wall to see how it would work. Next the circles will be prepped – paper removed from the stars, the outer circle seam pressed down and then glue basting to the background squares – I will take them with us to applique on the next trip on the road in the motorhome. The left over gray squares might be used in a scrappy border or binding around the red sashing – to be decided later. Linking to Quilting is More Fun than Housework —
Two more flannel blocks were made yesterday giving me 10 of the 42 needed. How is your weekend going ? Staying in from the heat or did you finally get a break in it? It was 10 degrees cooler yesterday making the high of 86 almost seem pleasant.

Karen-I cannot even imagine how exciting it is when you make that last turn on the frame!!!! Susan
it is always so nice and rewarding to get to the end – one more roll down though so it is a little closer to me to work on that last border
Oh the gray looks great! You gotta love it when a plan comes together. Have fun putting in the final stitches.
thanks Carla – I know some said I was playing it safe going with gray – but I like it!
The contrast of the bright colored blocks with the different gray backgrounds seems perfect… warmer than stark white …blends in … You will feel like a little celebration when you finish the lovely had-quilted quilt….
thanks – yes the gray and red combo with the stars satisfy me!
Those gray squares are the perfect backgrounds for your circles! So exciting to be almost finished your hand quilting on this quilt !
I will be glad to get the quilting done on this quilt – I always tire of it towards the end and always so glad to get a new quilt on the frame.
Yes I think the gray and red is going to work out great for these circle stars
I love how your Round We Go blocks are looking with the gray background squares and red sashing! We are on a quick road trip this weekend to see our kids – hot and humid in Nebraska. I’m really thankful for air conditioning!
thanks -I’m so glad they look like I wanted them to – you can never tell when you use prints for a background can you — have fun in Nebraska you must be in the eastern part if it is humid! hubby grew up in North Platte where it is dryer
Those greys are so nice. Really striking with the circles!
thanks! I think this will turn out how I want it to
It’s so exciting to see the little bit of quilting you have left to do! I love the red sashing on Round We Go, it really sets the stars off so beautifully. You are really making the flannel squares so quickly too. I enjoyed reading yesterday’s post and this morning’s too. I’ve been so busy getting the yard and the house ready for my daughter’s visit that I haven’t even opened up my tablet! Love all the projects you have going on and glad that I’m not the only one with so many too. Have a great Sunday and thank you for your blog, I enjoy it so much.
thanks Dottie – you will have a good visit with your daughter for sure – I hope the weather will not be too hot while she is there. Red and Gray always works for me! I wasn’t sure about gray prints but glad that was what I decided on
Love how the grey backgrounds really pop the circles! Great choice!
Enjoy your hand stitching today!
Thanks for linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching!
thanks Kathy, with the variety of colors in the stars I thought gray would be the best and the red works too
Stunning! I love your EPP circles and the backgrounds really look fantastic with it, contrasted by your sashing. Good color choices! You always do such great work. And I still am amazed at your hand quilting! Wow!
thanks! i think the red and gray are going to work out great – I just hope I don’t get dizzy looking at the polka dots and weird gray pieces here and there!
The gray squares with red sashing was perfect for the Round We Go stars. You do have a knack for putting colors and fabrics together. What’s your secret? I also have a question about the glue you use. Does it wash out? I’m preparing to do my first EPP and am deciding if I should glue baste or sew. Any advice you give me is much appreciated.
I think I have just been looking at photos of quilts so long and making them that I know what I like. For the EPP I am using the fabric glue pens – yes the glue washes out sometimes taking the papers back out can be a problem but if you loosen one edge up first and then gently pry it off you can get them out – Sue Daily’s papers are made out of some kind of paper that makes it easier to take the pieces out but I find them harder to work with as they seem to be thicker. Paper Pieces are lighter and easier to work with but the glue sticks to them more. If I make my own I use freezer paper and put the glue on the shiny side – it won’t stick as hard and easy to remove but occasionally you have to re-glue a piece here or there. If the pieces are only an inch like most hexies are I thread baste but I do not go through papers like some do. Some still thread baste if using large pieces but go through the papers which to me is harder to do
Oh yes to thr RWG fabrics and layout!
thanks! I thought this combo would work and so glad it will.
Love the red sashing in Round We Go it almost looks 3d. Love to see finishes too way to go.
always nice to hear from you Arlene – hope you are doing well! Yes I think these stars are going to work out well in these colors.
You are so close to finishing your quilting. It is so pretty. I love the grey background squares. Those circles really pop on it.
thanks! I am so glad to that I am almost done with Tumalo Trails I really want to get the next quilt on the frame and started before we start to travel again. I think the gray and red are perfect for the circle stars!
Love seeing the end of this quilt for you !!! Congrats on a near done and ready for binding finish… and the next quilt is ready but maybe a rest for your thumb??? I had MAJOR computer issues and no computer at all today until just now… linked to Kathy’s and visited you next 😀 Thanks to walmart for having a decent computer that could fit in my tight budget okay !!! We will try to fix the other one eventually but it is a fatal hard drive thing 🙁 oh well.. this one is a bit slower but then better in other ways so it is a trade off… enjoy making your round we go quilt.. love the light and dark gray mixed. We had a bit of a cooler day today … how about you? Kathi
yes so glad the quilt on the frame is almost done! I am not sure what I will do for binding for this one but seeing as it is scrappy maybe scrappy.
I will get Fall Harvest on the frame but do not know if I will take a break it is one of those chronic things were sometimes days it will ached and then it doesn’t so well wait and see.
We had internet problems for such awhile so understand your frustrations on computer problems and hope it well work well for you. Yes a bit cooler today and it felt so nice I have been out on the porch off and on all day
What a day I have had girl! Woke up to a DEAD computer and messed with it most of the day trying to get it working only for my honey who is not teckie to uncover in a diagnosing scenario that the hard drive was the problem… he will tinker with it later but we just got back from Walmart getting an affordable replacement for that high end computer that failed suddenly and for no reason! Oh well… I love finally seeing your blog post and the end of Tumalo Trails is so ever near! I know you have the next one ready but will you take a rest of this one for you thumbs sake?? I love the grey background on your Round we go blocks soooo much! I have started a new project.. it is not in my most recent post but should make my next one… glad I didn’t sleep last night much and got up to quilt… otherwise none would have gotten done! Hope you are enjoying the flannel piecing… what are you sewing it on.. did you get the red eye to quit being naughty?? I will be happy to get caught up on here and now that i have linked and replied to you and Kathy’s anniversary post… I can go cook some dinner! lol Kathi
I see two comments went through for you so well answer about the Red Eye – all is working well with it now other than the bobbin winder – it will only let it a little on it – about 1/4 full – well tinker more with it – the side winder will not work for this metal bobbin and I ordered plastic ones on the site that sells for the antiques and it says it is a match for the metal bobbin but made out of plastic so I hope I can get those to wind full on the side winder if I can’t get the one on the machine to work – it is giving me a perfect stitch!!
Your star blocks look lovely Karen and I can not believe you are so close to finishing yet another hand quilted quilt!!!!!! Hope the temps stay down for you I’m enjoying around 27C in the day time and around 23C at night just perfect weather for me LOL Cheers Glenda
we have had a couple nice days lately but it is normally in the 90’s at this time of year – I guess we love to complain about the weather! Yes another week or so and this one will be done I think I put it on the frame at the beginning of February
Wow! I love that gray with red sashing! It looks amazing. And congratulations on nearing the end of the Tumalo Trails quilting. That’s always exciting.
The lady who’s quilting my Antelope Canyon quilt went walking in the forest with me last week and showed me some possible patterns for the quilt. We each like one that’s sort of a modern clam shell. I bet she’ll finish soon as she’s very speedy. Good thing I have the binding all cut out already. Will need to get it sewn and pressed soon in anticipation.
a modern clam shell that sounds interesting. I think the red and gray is going to look great too – I’m glad I stuck with those colors
Love, love your ’round we go ‘ stars, the red & grey are such a good combo! And you are making great progress on your ‘tumalo trails’ quilt, so nearly there!
I really like the way these are going to look and I will bring them with me on our next trip coming up and hope to have all the appliquéing of circles to background squares by time we get back home and ready for the machine work
