I ended up doing a lot yesterday but have way too many photos for one post as it covers three different projects so today is just Tumalo Trails and I will save the others for the next day.
Tumalo Trails took two washings – I did pre-wash the purple back about 3 times before I used it if I remember right but – yes – it bled the first wash – I had purple water and 3 color catchers that turned purple!! I use a full load of water and let it soak for an hour and then wash. Then I look at it – yup back in it went – I soaked for another hour an then added Retayne and put it through the wash cycle and all the color catchers came out white – hallelujah – then into the dryer it went- I usually do on high – I figure if it is going to shrink just let it shrink as sometime down the road I will not remember to put the machine on medium or low. The quilt finished at 96 x 96 and that was good for our bed.
I started the quilt piecing in June of 2017 and the top was done by July 16 – then it sat for awhile as other quilts were taking their turns on the frame. Here it is out on the deck. I put it on the quilting frame on February 24, took a month off while we traveled and finished it up for a total of 156 hours of quilting over 4 months. So even though we were gone awhile and I was working on bird brain in the hoop I finished it in about the same time as always for a quilt this size.
Another outside photo – it was too big for the swing!
Even though the quilt started at 104 x 104 the shrinkage did not cause a lot of puffiness – some but not as much as sometimes – I don’t remember if I used Quilters Dream as I normally do – I know it was 100% cotton though as I always use that.
After the first wash all the white that was white on white had turned lavender!! After the second wash it was back to white
Some of you have said I was Wonder Woman LOL – when I saw these pajamas at Wal-Mart I had to get them – they are light weight and I thought maybe they would continue to help me be “wonder woman” they also had “Batgirl” so I got a pair of them too – figured maybe it would help!!
I have photos for binding for Bird Brain and I made a Tunisian Crochet hook holder and photos from Fall Harvest – but too many photos some of those well be for tomorrow.

Oh, that’s scary to have so much bleeding, especially with purple. So glad you managed to get it to stop. I have a front loading washer which uses less water than I’d like with new quilts. So every time I wash one, I worry. So far so good. I have a red batik that keeps bleeding after countless washes, so it has been relegated to tablecloth status. I use it for Friends of the Library events, picnics, etc. I never even hemmed it, but being batik it looks fine.
Considering I had already already washed the back numerous times and I thought I had treated it with Retayne I’m surprised it did – maybe I didn’t remember it right and I hadn’t treated it.
Congrats Wonder Woman!!!
thanks 🙂
Beautiful finish! So fortunate that all the rogue color finally came out with the second wash.
Yes glad it all worked out right in the end.
Wow, I am impressed that you got all that color out with subsequent washings. I have forgotten what type of washing machine you own, I have a top loader but it is low water so I always wonder how I should handle washing quilts. I have been taking mine to the laundry mat but it feels like those commercial machines are hard on quilts. Your quilt turned out lovely!
I got rid of my HE washer last year and got one that fills back up full!! So far it is doing quilts ok – the one I got rid of was a water saver and I did nothing but complain about it and we got rid of it — besides not filling full of water I don’t think it cleaned clothes as well either.
Congratulations on your finishes, Tumalo Trails looks lovely and I really like Bird Brain, how great as well to have the next quilt ready and waiting for you to carry on. It’s been so unusually hot here in England this summer, progress has been a little slow for me though I have finished hand quilting Sutton Grange (a Di Ford pattern) and it is waiting for its binding.
glad you are having a finish too they always feel so good don’t they
Our top loader died a while ago and now we have an HE, so I don’t think I could soak a quilt if I wanted to. How scary to see that lavender white, but great that you could get it all out! It’s a beautiful quilt! Looking forward to seeing your other projects!
we didn’t wait for our HE do die when we got rid of it, I just couldn’t stand it one more minute – I put up with it for about 8 years I guess and we had the extra money and so last year I started to price other machines and found one at a decent price and had them take the HE away when they delivered the new one and I’m so glad I did. I made sure the new one had an agitator and would fill up full and have been happy with it. The He wouldn’t fill up full – if I added a bucket of water to it to try to fill it up it would drain the extra water out – you just can’t wash a quilt good that way.
I am impressed!
thanks
Fabulous finish. There is a Tumalo trail in my future…
this was an easy quilt to make – keep in mind though that I upsized my blocks – I think the ones in the pattern were 9 inches and mine are 17 inches
Great finish, Karen! So sorry you had the bleed problem with the purple backing, but so glad that the excess dye came out and didn’t ruin your beautiful quilt! Looking forward to seeing a picture of the quilt on your bed at some point in the future…
Tumalo Trails is a wonderful finish, Karen! I’m going to have to put that block on my list – it’s so perfect for using scraps in lots of different colors. Glad you got the bleeding to stop! Your pajama pants are perfect!
I think the pj pants are perfect too – and they are comfy — Tumalo Trails blocks were easy to make and can be adjusted to any size you want to make really
Your Tumalo Trails turned out great! Beautiful!
thank you! I’m pleased with it and although it did shrink a little it still fits the bed!
I love your finish and to hear that there is MORE to look forward to tomorrow as well! I have quilted some and run errands… now ready to settle in for the afternoon heat! lol
Glad you got so much done and love the photos of the close ups of your quilt and quilting on Tumalo Trails 😀
Kathi
thanks Kathi – I’m getting ready to go out in the heat – need to look for some new shoes
The quilt turned out great!
thanks – I’m pleased with it
Another big finish! Another beautiful quilt. I used cotton batting in my king size quilt and it’s a real bear to dry it in the dryer. Do you find that true compared to wool?
I have only used wool a couple times so I’m not sure. Normally I will put the quilt through a 60 minutes drying cycle and because the dryer is not huge like at the laundromat it always seems to get rolled up into a ball leaving some of it still damp even if half way through the cycle I take it out and try to rearrange it – I usually drape it over the dining room table and chairs overnight so that by the next day it is dry.
Cute pjs and so you Karen, lol! Love how Tumalo Trails came out, even with it giving you a scare with the bleeding. I guess one never can tell when a quilt will bleed, and it’s best to expect it will and take measures to solve it like you did. We spent the day at the ball park again, watching our grandson play a couple of games. They won, so they play again tomorrow. Hope you have a lovely evening stitching.
🙂 thanks Dottie – it sounds like you are having a good time in Florida with family. We are driving to one of my brothers this weekend for a family reunion – an uncle that we have rarely seen will be here – well be so nice for all to see him – I saw him when I visited my aunt in WI at the Hospice when we were there this summer and he was visiting her too – now he gets to visit with everyone.
Having a little rain today…time to catch up on blog reading. Love your finished quilt…inspires me to make a scrap quilt…got plenty of scraps! People are always surprised about the bleeding dyes. Still happens all the time. I usually go right to hot water and a hot dryer with my new quilts also for pretty much the same reason.
yes and I always try to make them bigger than they need to be because I know they will shrink a little bit!
Karen, That is beautiful! Congratulations on that wonderful finish!
thanks Carolyn I’m glad that one is finished
Oh, your finished Tumalo Trails is just gorgeous! I don’t think I had seen the finished flimsy and have just been following your progress while the quilt was on the rails. I LOVE the secondary pattern that emerges from the block layout and the quilting is amazing.
thank you Laura, it is now on my bed and I’m happy with it
You certainly are a wonder!
thanks — I just seem to be stuck in a quilting mood!
