Organizing and Quilting

For Slow Sunday Stitching over at Kathy’s Quilts today I will be joining up with some hand quilting and organizing – seeing as the sewing machine will not be on I hope that counts!  I am folding fabric and looking for places on the shelves to put them.  I need to clear off the top shelf and do some more of it today.  Also linking to Quilting in more fun than Housework.

So far the shelf is like this – goodness where did that stack of neutrals come from – I didn’t know I had that much and there is another stack of more to put up there still of neutrals.

IMG_6938

All of this to go through still – everything on the the shelf that was moved came from here.

IMG_6939

And I’m not even talking about all the shoe box size boxes of scraps that I have divided up by color on the quilting room shelves – I know some of you will say “oh that’s not so much” but to me it is and heaven knows where it came from because I don’t remember half of this!!  Oh well organizing has just begun so there is a bit to do still.

IMG_6941

I finished my winter scarf – this week is to be in the 50’s so I won’t need it but so far they are saying the week after around the 19 or so it drops to the 30’s so I will probably use it then.

IMG_6935

The mystery quilt looks the same as the last photo except the neutral border is now sewed in place.  I’m taking today off from machine work and will get back to the green border on Monday.  I went back to working with the featherweight after I got it cleaned up – the Babylock decided to act up and the needle setting wouldn’t move to the center and I didn’t feel like marking a new guideline for a quarter inch.  I will have to search I guess on how to get the setting reset.  It has happened before but I don’t remember what I did to reset it  – I think these electronic machines are more trouble then they are worth – I wouldn’t have bought it but I won it and no one around here to take it to when it acts up and I don’t want to drive 85 miles to have someone look at it.  So glad I have my antique machines!

IMG_6917

Friday nights quilting on the Propellers – more will be done today.  Normally the quilting turns out better without the flash to see stitch work

IMG_6915

With flash – or is the difference just on my laptop – I see the stitch work better without the flash.

IMG_6916

I think I am going to take part in the So Scrappy quilt along The Rainbow Scrap Challenge – you do different colors every month doing the block(s) of your choice and the color that has been picked out by Angela.  I have a star block that I can use a set of Go Dies – these make a 12” block – I hope that is ok and that they aren’t supposed to be a certain size?  Right now I will plan on cutting and making 2 or 3 a month – to be decided.  This month is Red and the month is half over so I better get busy soon.  If 12 inches is too big someone please tell me!

IMG_6933

Part of this set will make this star along with one die from another collection.  I will use neutral backgrounds and then different color reds for the star.  You can find these at the link AccuQuilt Qube sets .

IMG_6934

Now before I get settled in to do some more quilting I need to set back and enjoy the last of the Christmas cookies that had been frozen and my Christmas tea!

Bluprint has announced a new deal for January .   On this deal you pay $100 for the year and you get your choice of a Project Box for free – now I think these project boxes are the same as the ones they have listed on their site for the past 4-6 months and if it is then the quilting box is worth $175.00 – there is a quilt kit in it and other goodies (must check) – plus you get your choice of 12 free classes to keep in your class library – 3 each quarter – you pick them out and keep them when they tell you that you can – also you get free shipping on whatever you buy in the year and view all the classes available on Bluprint with your membership for a year – one person stated that it is like “Netflix for Crafters” and she was right – now where did I see that mentioned I can’t for the life of me remember who said that and I just saw it yesterday.  Project boxes are in Quilting, Sewing, Knitting,  – all kinds of stuff – oh Embroidery also – all have their own value on them depending on what the craft is.  You can find the boxes under the “Shop” tab on the site.  When I checked it the price listed for a subscription was still at the deal that it was for the December sale $79.99 but I think that will be changed today.   So the deal is the whole month of January!!  Take a look and see what you like if you are interested.

I find too that when taking pictures, the quilting shows best without the flash. For the RSC, you sew whatever you want, whatever size you want. The idea is to just use the color of the month. She is having a Tiny Tuesday sew along if people want to participate.

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 7:32

thanks – I won’t bother with the tiny as I am doing so many other quilts right now that involve tiny also – don’t need another!

Your stash is so organized! I just moved and am still trying to set up my sewing room. I love your teacup – it’s so unusual with the lid. Was it a gift?

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 7:34

thanks JoAnna – the teacup is one of 4 that I found at Hobby Lobby about 4 or 5 years ago, the saucers I found at an antique shop I got 4 of them in pastel colors. The lid was actually found at Krogers about the same time – it has a partial slit in the top that you rest the string of the bag and then you can actually use the lid to squeeze the tea bag also – I’ll show it tomorrow! I bought it all a present for me

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 20:23

Joanne I found a link to the lid for the tea cup and sharing in tomorrow’s post

Organizing is a lot of work, but it sure feels good when it’s done. I still have my scraps to organize and a bit more work on getting my fabric on the shelves. I had to take a break and actually sew something. I’ll get back to it soon. Your organization is looking good!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 7:34

it is so much work! but yes worth it in the end and you get the bonus of seeing what you have once again in case you have forgotten like I have!

For the block size go to the January 5, 2019 post on SoScrappy.

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 8:04

thanks – someone else already said they can be any size but thanks for giving me the info

  • Quilter Kathy Jan 13, 2019 @ 8:15

    Congratulations on finishing your scarf!!
Your mystery quilt looks fabulous on the design wall!
    Enjoy your slow stitching today!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 8:26

      thanks Kathy enjoy your day

  • Jeanne Y Bishop Jan 13, 2019 @ 8:32

I wish I was as organized as you are! Your studio looks great! As for your machine, since it’s electronic, you could try unplugging it overnight and then testing it the next day. Sometimes that “resets” the programming. Unplugging it for some time drains the memory so when you turn it on again it works like new (or so). I love my vintage machines too! I usually use a Singer 401 made in the early 1950s, and it has the best feed system I’ve ever found.

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 8:42

thanks – I just unplugged it and well let it go until tomorrow and check it again. I think that is what I might have done last time. I like the machine and it was sure nice to win it, but there are no dealers close to me and the one I called last year with a question didn’t want to help me because I hadn’t bought it from her could you believe!! I was amazed as I was going to buy some extra feet also and she wouldn’t even take my order as she said she didn’t do business over the phone! I since found out there is another dealer but that one too is about 85 miles from me so I well one day have to give in and go in that direction instead and see what that one is like.

Gretchen answered your question about the RSC, but I was going to say the same thing. The fun of it is joining in with the link-up on Saturdays and seeing what everyone else is making – lots of inspiration! (Too much sometimes – I always want to try all the new blocks:) Good for you, working on reorganizing! It is a slow process. Enjoy your Sunday, Karen!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:08

thanks Diann – I know a project like the RSC really won’t make a dent in my boxes but it will be fun to get a rainbow quilt in the end

  • Preeti Harris Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:19

Looks like you are starting the new year right. Good organization, projects proceeding at a terrific pace and tons of inspiration to spread the quilty joy around. Love the Bonnie Hunter quilt!!!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:22

thanks! I am really slowing down on Bonnie’s quilt now that I am on the borders! Pieced borders always give me fits!

  • Carla Therrien Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:28

I like to keep a handle on my stash also. I have a friend who’s stash is so large she doesn’t have room to work in her room. That would definitely bother me, but others feel comfortable there. Your propeller quilt looks so cheerful with the pretty fabrics you used.

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:50

yes I like to keep a handle on my stash and it has gotten larger than I thought it was especially when you add in all the boxes of scraps smaller than a fat quarter – actually some of those boxes have fat quarters in them also. I know a lot of people have triple the size stash I do and I really wouldn’t want that – it can be over whelming to have too much. I really do like scrappy quilts the best so most of my fabric is one yard or less

  • Kathi Clower Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:33

Thanks for showing your areas that need organizing and talking through your plan to get your areas wrangled… I NEED to organize sooo much fabric and stuff… I have only started with getting my bag making stuff in order… my quilt making fabrics are all over and people have been sending me their scraps to separate into colors and use for Etsy shop making ideas… well they are all over too!!! I need an organizing intervention now that sun has left the mountain and I am feeling down in the dumps and overwhelmed… good luck to you in your organization.. I love your neutrals and your colors of fabrics to organize on that shelf… love your take on the mystery of Bonnie’s and am glad you are joining the rainbow scrap challenge! I thought I would before I made my list and became overwhelmed… maybe I will be able to next year if I can get back on track this year! Hope you enjoyed your tea and cookies… looks yummy! Happy stitching and organizing!!! Kathi

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:52

I need to spend time today working on my fabric for sure – the borders for the mystery quilt can wait – there is no rush to get it done.
I hope the sun comes out soon for you and me too – it has been way too cloudy here. At least the colors in the sewing room can really add some extra brightness to the world

  • Fred Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:49

Lovely organized studio! Love your big design wall!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 9:52

I am lucky to have one wall in this room to use for a design wall – I will try to organize more but I need to go grocery shopping first and then devote the rest of the day to it.

  • Gail Jan 13, 2019 @ 12:52

I have taken pictures of my quilting at the golden hour. Just before sunset, the sun is low in the sky and the texture of the quilting shows up better Nice red scarf!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 14:58

yes that is a good way to do it – but this quilt is on the frame and I don’t take it off until it is finished – only one window in the room
thanks for the comment on the scarf – I am trying to learn how to crochet better

  • Deanna Davis Jan 13, 2019 @ 13:17

Nice job pn the mysyery .. Again I saved it as I am working on too much. Today is binding and finish work for me … Come to quilt next month 🙂 🙂

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 15:00

I need to look back through my downloads and see if I saved any of the older ones, I’m really not sure – I always forget about the quilt groups and do not drive at night much – just prefer not to although I can

  • Kahty Jan 13, 2019 @ 15:27

Love that stack of neutrals in your sewing room. I’m almost to the same point of Good Fortune. Hopefully the neutral borders will go on tomorrow. Beautiful machine stitching! Happy sewing!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 15:32

the quilting is hand quilting not machine quilting. I have a lot more neutrals then I thought I did – way more. Good luck on your good fortune – I need to work on the green borders tomorrow

  • barbara woods Jan 13, 2019 @ 16:28

    love your Bonnie Hunter mystery

    • Karen Jan 14, 2019 @ 18:41

thanks – I just found your comment in my spam folder for some reason – glad I checked before I hit delete all spam

  • CathieJ Jan 13, 2019 @ 18:05

I spent some time organizing my cooking books and magazines today. I think it is that time of year. Your fabric stash looks so pretty….and much better organized than mine. The mystery quilt looks wonderful and you can definitely see the quilting better without the flash. We are finishing the Christmas cookies today also. Those look quite tasty.

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 18:46

I have got such a stack of old cookbooks and quilting books for the library for their second hand store that I told Melanie I will need to bring in a little at a time or they will kill me LOL but I emptied off one whole shelf and part of another.

  • Sandra B Jan 13, 2019 @ 20:26

Karen, your Good Fortune is looking great! I love the neutral border! I think it is nice to have that break before the next border with the green. I still haven’t done much at all on the mystery quilt! I am having a lot of fun working on hand piecing Carolina Chain from Bonnie Hunter’s Addicted to Scraps book. I keep thinking I will set it aside to work on something else, but I just cannot make myself do it! Normally, I do not have any problem jumping around from one thing to another, but this one just calls to me…. I have printed all the clues for Good Fortune, so I can start on that when I finish Carolina Chain.
We are nearing the end of some wintry weather here in Virginia. Started late yesterday afternoon with snow…then turned to freezing rain, all rain, then back to freezing rain, and is finishing up now with snow. Supposed to move on out sometime overnight tonight. I have been hand piecing most of the day… my favorite way to spend the day!
Seeing your cookies and tea reminded me that we still have some cookies and some pound cake in the freezer from Christmas. I should have pulled some out today!

    • Karen Jan 13, 2019 @ 21:35

I had not heard of that pattern – I will need to look at it – I have all of her books I think. I need to make more of hers to use up more scraps! such winter weather! glad it missed us. my sister just had a little snow and sleet but no ice.
I still have a coffee cake and a banana bread in the freezer! Worked all day on the sewing room organization and barely sat down to stitch today but I did get a little done – back to the Bonnie quilt tomorrow!

  • Nanette Jan 14, 2019 @ 6:59

Your mystery looks pretty! Lots of work. The 12″ are nice, and it takes fewer blocks of course to have a quilt. I tend to like smaller blocks. Like Gretchen said, you can make whatever pattern you want to. Last year one of the bloggers provided a block pattern each month. A no thinking quilt! But I love the way mine turned out! This year I am working on the Capital T project with Bella and doing an RSC project – TBD on the block! You will enjoy as a lot of quilters join in!

    • Karen Jan 14, 2019 @ 8:15

I made a nice star block last night for the RSC challenge a 12″ and think I will make another and with you mentioning smaller blocks if I have time maybe I will do another block in a smaller size and two quilts at the same time – we will see.
