I said the other day that I was just working on one quilt top but I take that back – I am participating in the RSC19 challenge at SoScrappy and by making just a couple big blocks every month I will have another quilt top at the end of the year – so I am linking up to SoScrappy RSC19 today and here are my yellow blocks for the month – right now I am trying to make each month – 1 star and 2 – 36 patch blocks – these blocks are 12.5 inches – I will link up in the morning. For this challenge you make whatever blocks you want and whatever size but the color is picked for you. The point is to use your stash scraps.
With the Red blocks that I made in January this is what they are like so far – no name for this one so far.
Yesterday I managed to only get one border done – I had planned on getting both of them done but life got in the way – there were errands to run and exercise to do and I just ran out of time. So Good Fortune still needs the bottom border on but so far so good – what I redid on the red border to make it lay flatter helped and this border is doing the rest. No ripples right now! Usually with a piano key border I make something for the corners – this time I decided not to – in the other borders there is a blue half square triangle block but this one would have had to have been a huge one and I didn’t think that would be right in the least. This way no corner to detract from the stencil quilting on the border.
The stencil is going to work out so well and I’m so happy with the corner section – I will move this out just a little way from where it is now and do straight line grid work of some type in the empty neutral strips area. I have been asked what color thread will I be using and you know I have not decided that – a lot of times I have decided and need to order a color but this time I might try to go with what I have in my box and than might be more than one color – too be decided. I have a very full thread box!
Only this much got quilted on the Retro Airship Propellers on Thursday night
I started to work on this section last night

I did the RSC challenge a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Maybe I’ll do it again next year. I am doing the Splendid Sampler this year so am using up smaller scraps to make the 6″ blocks. And for one of my guilds’ block exchanges I made scrappy star blocks with 16 patch centers, using up more. But those scraps sure do multiply!
I hadn’t planned on joining this as i always have so many things on the go but thought it might be something to use up more individual colors and it is – but of course they will never all be used up
That piano key border is so nice and I like the stencil. So fun to see your progress on it and on the Propeller quilt. Some days there is so much to get done, and I dislike it when quilting has to take a back seat! I’m tucking in and sewing today as we watch the next snowstorm roll through. This one may be another big one, so we’ll see.
I hope you don’t get a ton more snow – we were supposed to get a lot of rain today but it looks like it might have moved a little east of us we did get a half inch in the night and probably more this morning but not the severe storms they had said.
This border is tying it all together well and making it lay flatter than it was.
Even with your “life interruptions”, you manage so much progress on a variety of projects. This current stash-busting endeavor is very appealing……really like it and will be a fun one to quilt!
I only wish it would truly bust the stash – LOL but we know it never truly does that – still so much to use up in the bins
Good Fortune is looking lovely and I really like that piano key border of mixed neutrals. What a beautiful stencil that is as well, will look great on the border and I’m sure it won’t be long until it’s on the frame.
I’m going to enjoy this border I hope the stencil will fit easily without a lot of adjustments – I haven’t measured it!
I really like your RSC blocks, and they look so pretty the way you have them laid out on your design wall! I know your ideas about that will change as you add more blocks in the different colors, but it’s fun to see how they’re looking right now. The border for Good Fortune looks wonderful – it’s a nice frame for the scrappy and colorful main part of the quilt! I’m glad you’ve found a stencil for quilting that you like, too.
I like how I have them on the wall too – I was thinking if I got with it I might need to make more blocks – we will see how it goes as it grows!
I too like how Good Fortune is turning out – glad I settle on a final border with larger pieces it is going well.
When life interferes with quilting, what can you do but do what you have to do and then go back to quilting of course! You got a lot done anyways and your borders look so pretty and I really like that stencil. I’m in love with your RCS blocks too, the fabric is so pretty and colorful. Scrappy is wonderful, isn’t it? Windy and sunny here today with a high of 67. Have fun in your sewing room!
I had my yellow blocks done last week but saved them for today to show. it is to finally be warmer here today and the rain stopped – over this week we have had close to 3 inches again!
I love the idea of the different colors of thread to quilt your Good Fortune. Scrappy on a new level! Your RSC blocks looks wonderful!
yes it is so scrappy anyhow I doubt the thread will be noticed other than on the large neutral border!
Nice job on those borders for Good Fortune. Looks like you had some fun with your YELLOW scraps! I’m looking forward to seeing how your RSC quilt will grow.
thanks – I just finished piecing the last border – now to press and get it on the quilt and I can say this top is done. I am enjoying working on the RSC challenge I wasn’t sure if I would so never joined up but after I got my sewing cleaned up and bins sorted with different colors in them it made it much easier to see what I have and what needed to be tamed.
I am loving Good Fortune… and your progress on Airship is right on time too <3
I had forgotten about RSC 19 too.. now that I am getting so organized I might join in next month with my scrap bins and play catch up… hmmm
I can't wait to see the thread color or colors you decide to use for Good Fortune… the outer border stencil especially 🙂 Kathi
thanks Kathi – you can always catch up because you only make what you want for RSC!
I really like the subtilty of the piano key border. It adds a lot to the quilt but still lets the main part of the quilt shine.
thank you! it does make it big enough without taking anything away from the main part for sure
