RSC19–Yellow for February

Slow to get started on my yellow blocks for So Scrappy’s RSC19 challenge – I got 3 red blocks made last month for that color choice and late yesterday afternoon thought I would get busy on a block to link up before I made supper.

I am continuing the same style of blocks throughout the year for this challenge just changing the color – they could be two quilts or 1 large quilt – to be decided.  Two different styles of blocks that could go very well into one quilt.

I will also make at least two of the 36 patch blocks – I might make more than 2 blocks of this block  if I feel like it and same with the stars – right now it is just one of each star and two of the patches.  This one is laid out and ready to sew today.  Still looking the color placement over before I get started and see a couple I might move.  These squares were already cut and in my 2.5 inch box so I used those, I have more yellows to cut up for the second block.

After looking through all the stash that I have on the shelves I find I do not have anything large enough for a backing for Good Fortune – the goal this year is to not buy fabric unless needed so I found two pieces that equal 9 yards total of two very closely related colors – both are creamy very lightly tinted yellow – you almost can’t see the hint of yellow unless you have the right light. I think I am going to get a package of Red dye and see what color I can get them to turn into – just to make the back a little more interesting.  Yes I could piece a back from a lot more pieces on the shelf but I want to have as few seams possible for the back as the front has so many.

Here is the crochet afghan on the quilting frame – this is to show the size and color – not quite laying straight but can give you an idea of where it is now.  Three colors done yesterday.  I have 4 more of the purple/red family of color to do before starting the green for the 3 time.  A border well be added around this afghan as well and Attic 24 has given ideas on that this week.  I might have to end up getting a few more skeins of yarn for that but no rush so I will wait and see what it looks like I have left over before I decide the colors for the border.

The afghan is looking really pretty. I can’t crochet at all, so am always impressed by the stitches you can get.

I have a bunch of tea-dyed muslin that I’m using for the back of Good Fortune and hope to get it sandwiched this weekend sometime. I agree – the fewer seams on the back, the better due to the all seams on the top. I’m going to quilt it very simply. Still deciding between a grid or horizontal lines with the machine. We’ll see!

I remember when all I used was muslin for the back of quilts now I can’t stand the thought of plain white LOL

Wise to keep the seams to as few as possible. I have just started hand piecing some hst’s to try and use up scraps. I too want to use up stash and not purchase unless its needed to finish a project.

I think when cleaning up my sewing room recently and seeing the fabric on my shelves as I was folding my common sense kicked in and thought I was being kind of foolish not using what I have when so many have so little – but also as I get closer and closer to 70 my common sense is really telling me to not leave all this behind as fabric but as quilts.

I really like your yellow star – that background fabric is so interesting! The yellow 36 patch blocks will be fun, too. How handy to have a bunch of 2.5 inch squares already cut! I cut a lot of extra 2.5 squares last year when I was making the Scrappy Sprouts blocks, and that’s always a fun little basket to look through when I need something that size. Do you think your yellow backing fabric will turn orange when mixed with the red dye? It will be interesting to see!

I’m not really sure because the fabric is almost white with just the barest hint of yellow – I guess it depends on how long it stays in the dye – I have not done a lot of dying. I used this newsprint fabric for the back of the red star also I only have one yard of it so it won’t work for the whole year of stars but I have another type of print to use too so it should blend well for a scrappy quilt.

Wow! You have made great progress on your crocheting and it looks so good.
I am amazed at all you get done: your Good Fortune and your hand quilting.
It is nice to see that you are on the last row of your propellers. Hooray for you!
And glad that Melanie has had a conclusion to the last month.

thank you Debbie now for Melanie to gain her strength back from this horrible 4 weeks of back and forth in and out of the hospital and time to heal. I was amazed at how much I have gotten done in the past four weeks while attending to her – staying busy helped!

Love your yellow blocks, you are making a great start on them. Ill be interested to see how your backing fabric turns out after you dye it.

    • Karen Feb 16, 2019 @ 14:23

yes it will be interesting! I hope I don’t mess it up – but it is just a back of a bed quilt – not many will see it!!

Hi, I like the idea of dying the fabrics to add more interest, and you are so right about keeping those seams on the back to a minimum. Thank you for your insights.

I’m going to work on it tomorrow and see what happens!

Hi Karen… I love your yellow block and block in planning for this month! So fun 🙂 I love your afghan progress A LOT!!! I also love the idea of getting some red dye and playing with all that creamy yellow yardage to see what happens… did you remember me mentioning the dying class on Bluprint? That might help you decide what kind of dye to buy too 🙂 I am all about using my stash this year too !! Have a great morning … I am up at a crazy time after having a very busy week… time to put in a few stitches now 🙂 Kathi

    • Karen Feb 17, 2019 @ 8:10

no I don’t remember the dye class, I just grabbed a bottle at Wal-Mart – I’m not a professional dyer by any means 🙂 But I will still show what happens! I will need to check the class out thanks for mentioning it
