Yesterday was such a nice day outside that it was a yard working day for me – mainly the grass needed cutting and I was ready to tackle it. But first the quilting on Good Fortune
And then it was time to roll the quilt down and low and behold the beginnings of the border is seen at the top – remember this is a very wide border – but the rows of orange and blue/green blocks is getting less! Linking to MCM#152 — Love Laugh Quilt — Small Quilts and Doll Quilts — Em’s Scrapbag —
I started back in the middle last night
I cut grass in the back yard, then the front yard then over to the side of the house where the garden beds are – I took photos last night around 6:30 while I was taking a walk around before coming in and writing my blog and quilting – I got in about 20 minutes of walking and 2,500 steps making my total over 10,000 for the day. I love it this time of year when I can spend more time taking laps around the property
this big area used to be just a big open field with one tree close to the road – now it is full of trees and I cut this all about every 2 weeks at this time of year so I can walk out here and about once a month after the rains slack off in the middle of summer.
If you turn the opposite way you see our woods these run the length of the back of the property and then one full acre of woods along one side of the house by the driveway. The woods are so thick with underbrush that you don’t bother to walk in it – you would be fighting the vines and prickly things.
As I was walking along this area heading towards my big “open field” I thought I heard a noise behind me I guess
I found I had a companion following me – this one is harmless most are – people out here in this part of the country just do not seem to take care of their dogs and we constantly have them running through our land – this one followed me to the end of our property and then walked on down the dirt road that runs along one side and was gone after he licked my hand and got a little petting. I had seen this one around before but he never stuck around to get petted. I don’t know what kind of dog this is but he was a big one – look at those feet – if you click on the photo they go to an enlargement.
So that was my day – I was cutting grass, reading a book on the porch, doing laundry, walking numerous laps around the property, and I even dug up a little more plants from the bed I am digging up and replanted a little – but a lot more of that garden to take care of! You can see the end I started digging up plants on and you can see how much more there is to go!
I’m not doing the replanting nice and pretty – I’m digging a shallow hole which is about all you can do here in this area and dropping a big clump of plants in it with as much dirt still connected to it as I can get and then empty the wheelbarrow with the dirt that is left and packing it around them – I hope they will take hold! These are purple coneflowers and black eyed Susan’s mainly with a little bit of other things that surround them – we will see how they are next year!
Hope you all had a great weekend!

You have beautiful acreage. You are making progress with replanting those plants, but it looks like a bit of work! That dog would’ve given me a bit of a fright; he’s definitely big! Glad he was friendly.
he did startle me as he was moving so quietly – I’m not sure what I heard that made me turn and see him. I recognized him though right away.
You get your hand quilting done much faster than I get my machine quilting done! ??? I think you’ve done several quilts in the time I’ve done Lost My Marbles.
LOL – surely not! you must have been quilting more than the marbles in this time – I started Good Fortune the beginning of March
That yard is large. I’m not much of a gardener but I do like the flowers. Your quilt is coming along nicely.
the yard is too big, it is harder to keep up with the older I get!
You live in such a beautiful spot! I can see that it is a lot of work, though. Sounds like you had a nice day yesterday – a little bit of everything! Good Fortune is moving along – you’re getting closer!
yes it is pretty but a lot to take care of so the forest doesn’t overtake us! You really have to keep it cut back and use weed killer too which I need to get this week and take care of as soon as we have a break in all the rain
Oh my gosh, that is a lot of yard to cut the grass and take care of but I love it. My daughter has an acre and her husband said never again, he’s done with all that mowing. He’s thinking he wants about half an acre next time, lol. You did so much work yesterday, my goodness. It must have been so exciting to see the border when you rolled your quilt down, the end is in sight! I think that’s a chocolate lab you met on your walk, they are gentle loving giants. Thank you for all your lovely pictures of your yard, such a pretty and peaceful place to walk. Hope you have a wonderful day, it’s sunny here and 85 today.
this dog seemed really gentle so maybe that is the kind it is – not a mutt for sure from the way he looked. Yes I was glad to see the border in site – on the second half for sure now.
I guess I must keep about 2 acres cut but it isn’t really all that hard to do with a rider mower
You have a lovely yard! I’m rooting for those coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans you replanted.
Your visitor looks like some kind of a lab.
I enjoyed the shot of Good Fortune in the rack.
the flowers should come back they are pretty hardy
Love the hand quilting–also the colors.
thanks Claire – these colors in this quilt sure are bright aren’t they
He looks like a sweet pup! I would love to live in the country and have a million dogs!! But then reality sets in and I am happy to live in the suburbs with 2 dogs. LOL!
well we do not have any pets but at times when I see 4 dogs run across my deck from the woods I wonder why people have them if they let them run all over the place like that!! Most are harmless – a few I’m not to sure of and don’t go near them and toss a rock in the general area to scare them off
Good job on your quilting! Your yard is beautiful!
thank you Emily!
What a lovely setting, Karen! I know it is a lot of work, but how peaceful it looks! I imagine you can hear the sounds of nature, for sure….I would love that! I know I have seen pictures that you have posted before, but I really enjoyed seeing these ones…
I think those who thought the dog is a Chocolate Lab are correct. That is what it looks like to me. They really are a gentle breed.
Your quilting on Good Fortune is really moving along… I know that the quilting on that border will take longer than the blocks, but I was surprised to see the beginning of the border come into view.
We have had a beautiful day today…I went to exercise this morning, then worked in the yard the rest of the day. It was much cooler than it has been. The rains that we got yesterday brought in the cooler weather I think. I wouldn’t mind if it stayed like this for a while!!
it is a lot of work but I like not having a neighbor over a fence – I love the peace and quite – while we are right next to the highway it is still a fairly quite area that we live in – yet that was a gentle dog for sure – although he did startle me he was moving so quite ! It got really humid today and more storms expected here on Wednesday night – might be ones – I hope not!
I’m always amazed at how quickly you can hand quilt your tops! We’ve had so much wet weather here it’s difficult to get much yard work done. Your canine companion is adorable, I’m glad he was friendly!
I always go with a little quilting every day and it gets done! it has been very wet here too and I have water standing in one part of the yard that I just had to go around when mowing, it has been there forever and we are to get a couple more inches on Wednesday night – I have a feeling that area won’t dry out until July!
