RSC20

Yes finally getting started on my new RSC20 quilt – the color choice was announced on the 1st of the month but I have been clearing off the table of other patterns and finally have a clean table to work from.

I am using a pattern called Country Charmer for this quilt and will do 2 blocks of each color for 10 months.  Then when the blocks are done – because so many colors are used I will then decide what color to do my sashing and nine patch blocks that finish up the quilt.  The pattern is by Lynn Wilder of Sew n’Wild Oaks.  I had seen this pattern someplace last year (or maybe longer?) and ordered it then and there knowing I wanted to make it.  But you know me I had way too many going and had to wait to clear things up a little – well that is never going to happen so I looked the pattern over a bit and decided I could do it using the RSC colors! why not  – I like one color version that Lynn shows on the back of the pattern in a Christmas color version and I am seriously thinking of making it this year also – we will see if I get to it

One thing I really like about this pattern – and maybe all of her patterns include this?  A nice big Block Layout sheet.  So easy to see where you want what colors.  I started with this – laying out pieces as I cut to keep track.

And this is what I am ready to sew – although after looking at the colors on the computer I might trade out the four green blocks on point to a different shade – I will look at it again today before I start to sew.  The next green block will have different colors of green.

I am so glad my cutting work table can crank up high – no bending over!! I can work with my table counter top height.  So glad Mike found the table base and the wood base for a table and put it together last year when he redid the sewing room

You just insert the crank put it the level you want and then I take the crank out and put it aside so I’m not bumping into it.  The sun sure was coming in the window when I took this photo – sorry

I had tons of greens to choose from – this box is packed

I quilted in this area on WB Tuesday night and had to remark a few more of the lines as I messed up again – problem is that not all of the lines stayed straight when I was drawing and so I will need to fudge a few of them to make them look right.

That sheet looks like something that ought to be included in more patterns. Makes all kinds of sense. Nice pattern for the RSC!

What a great idea about including the placement sheet! I used to lay all the pieces out on a large square of batting so they don’t move, then start sewing units together, press them and return them to keep things in order.

I really like the new quilt pattern and block – it looks like a great idea for the RSC! The block layout sheet definitely looks really handy. Maybe other pattern designers don’t do something like that because they have you make multiple sections at a time and then have you create the blocks. But for a block or two each month, it looks really helpful! I have a counter height cutting table and live it! How handy to have one you can move up and down.

Oh, my goodness, Karen, your RSC2020 quilt is going to be nothing short of gorgeous! I chose my block and dug out some greens, and realized here in Tx I don’t have many in my stash! I made my first block and it was horrible! I either need to dig deeper, or just wait until I return to NS to make my green blocks. I guess things could be worse, lol!

What a great idea to have a table that has an adjustable height. Super ideal. And so is the direction sheet with the block placement. I made a similar tool out of foam core board. Have a large size and then a 12” size. Then I covered it with cotton batting, folding the ends over to the back and glueing. I can either place a block on it or stack up a few blocks at a time and take to my sewing machine.

I laughed about your ‘green’ tale. I don’t enjoy working with green unless is is just a sprinkle needed in a quilt. So, when I was reading all the great blogs about 2020 goals I stored the information in my head. That is because I found for me that I make Monthly Goals and that works so much better for me. (Along with my daily task list.) But, this year I did make a Goal List for 2020 , albeit after the 1st,….. for quilting only.

    1. Make a green quilt!

That is my number one goal to challenge myself this year.
The list only has 3 Goals (quilting) because I want to have a win/win chance of attaining these goals. And my year’s goal list is only for quilting. I am naturally goal oriented so doing it monthly is great for me and prevents me from becoming bogged down as the year progresses. Then during the month, I even break it down into weekly goals. I usually am able to complete or nearly complete my goals by the end of the month. Which keeps me happy.

Yes, now I remember another goal on that quilting list. To hand quilt one quilt this year! Since I machine quilt because I make so many quilts every year, and I use cotton batting. Delighted that I committed to a short 2020 Quilt Goal List as this quilt will be the first polyester batting that I have used in 25+ years now. I quilt all of mine on my domestic 30 year old Bernina. She is a real work horse. My other horse is out in the paddock enjoying the sun on this cold Maine morning.

Thanks for the non verbal prodding to get me to hand quilt again. I still have my oval hoop I used to quilt with so long ago.

    Dear Karen,

Love the layout sheet, all patterns should come standard with this sheet. Always have to balance my layout on a square piece of wood, which is in the sewing room. Having an adjustable table at the right height, is a kindness we gift ourselves. The other really handy thing to have, a chefs mat to stand on. Have one which means my feet do not get sore, when I stand for long period of time cutting fabric. You can never have enough green fabric. Always need a a shade or two which we do not have.

Love that adjustable table. Could you tell where you found it? Thanks, Sharon.

Love your new project!! And adore that table!!!

LOVE that new pattern! The large layout sheet is an excellent idea, especially doing the RSC.

    I really love that pattern!

is that adjustable table base something we can order online? Do you have the info? I really need one like that!

Hi Karen, that pattern is going to make a lovely quilt using scraps in the different colours, but it won’t look scrappy. It will be amazing I’m sure. Thanks so much for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks. 🙂

That layout sheet is really a great idea! AND taking a photo first before sewing is always a good idea because you notice things with a photo that you might not with the naked eye.

I remember when Lynn first played with that block and put it on her blog as a ‘look what I made’ – I loved it them and I love it now! One day, maybe, I’ll make that quilt too. (Need to get through my other projects first though!)
I’m having a nice catch up read this morning 🙂
