A Little Afternoon Delight

Or should I say total frustration!  I do not like how the pattern directions are written for this section of Afternoon Delight – just tell me a finished measurement in a clear concise way.  Normally I can figure out directions ok but this part of it for the Shoo Fly block – there are nine of them in this quilt were totally weird – in my opinion.  After an almost all day session I managed to get the tiny square patchwork pieces done right and moved on to the next part of it and I messed up once again – was about ready to quit but continued on until I got one block finished only to realize that to square the block to 7.25 inches my points were going to be cut off – I cut them off and will call this one the practice block and maybe make an extra one or take the half square triangles off and make new ones and redo the block.  The quilt will be scrappy so those dark tiny square in there won’t really be standing out as much as they do right now.

I better not let myself get frustrated so quickly with just one section of this quilt – a lot more to go  –  LOL  some days it is better to just stop while you are ahead and say do it another day but no I persisted.

Quilting from Saturday night on RSC19-Stars – and yes I need to put Afternoon Delight aside and finish my four blocks for RSC20 before I get too far behind.  Linking to MCM#174 Cooking Up Quilts — Small Quilts  & Doll Quilts —

Pizza ready to put in the oven – I don’t make homemade pizza often but do love it – would prefer to go out and sit and eat it at a pizza place – but not right now and live too far to order it

I think the precision needed for that Sue Garman pattern I had (forget the name but with similarly tiny squares) was what made me decide it was too much for me. I just wasn’t up for making so many blocks all the same either. For your quilt, 7.75″ is a very unusual size!
I reached the front pockets of the sweater I’ve been knitting in the round. It was difficult to drop 34 stitches on each side and then cast in 34 more in the next round, but I managed after a lot of sweat and a little swearing. Now I am just knitting all around – on #4 needles – for about 14 more inches. This will keep me busy, doing a few rounds a day, forever, I think.

The shoofly block is the same in OMIGOSH! which finishes at 4-1/2″. I’ve seen several quilts from made this pattern and they are all beautiful but Afternoon Delight does takes patience to make. You’ll not whip this one out in a month or two, better pace yourself.

There’s a stubbornness in us quilters that just have to get to the next step to prove we can get it done. When a block comes out like that, with points that will be chopped, it’s time for a break. Grr. I’m sure you’ll get it figured out, but frustrating, nonetheless! Glad you have other non-stressful projects to work on!

I find walking away and taking a little stroll usually helps when I hit a troublesome bit in quilting and in working (finding bugs in code). I didn’t realize those 4 patches were so teeny tiny. It always amazes me how some patterns are so well written but others seems to make things intentionally difficult. Just give us the size of the finished parts and finished block and usually we can figure things out. Good luck.

Sometimes I can walk away from a project and come back another day and sometimes I won’t let the gremlins win! I hope it all works out for you on the rest of the shoo fly blocks.

Your homemade pizza looks great. I tried my hand at a french bread pizza last week. It turned out pretty good, so I think I will make it again. I will have to look for that creamer. Snickers are a fave. Have a good day!

The issues with your block sound frustrating! I hope you got it figured out so that the next blocks like that go more smoothly. Love homemade pizza, and yours looks delicious! I don’t think I’ve made it since my youngest left home. And Snickers coffee creamer – wow!

Pizza yummmmm. So sorry you are having problems with those directions, so frustrating indeed. The block is lovely.

It’s a very nice looking block – I love the pattern. Too bad it’s so frustrating! I hope it becomes easier as you progress! Excellent progress on your knitted sweater!

Uh huh, said you were a brave girl to tackle that pattern. It is truly frustrating when the patterns and measurements are not clear. Pizza looks wonderful. Glad you found yeast to make it.

Oh, home made pizza, how delicious! I’ve made it now and again, usually with a purchased base though.

Afternoon Delight is the BOM for the Quilt Show this year and there is a lot of infomation for completing all the blocks. Hope this helps.

I hope you find a rhythm with the new piecing quilt you are working on so it is fun and not frustrating… I am into Starbucks Caramel Machiato right now from our local grocery store 🙂 Homemade pizza looks better than the frozen sort we buy! Hope it was yummy… I love your progress on stitching on your RSC quilt. I love how the dark green looks on your swing too btw! Very good choice 🙂 Kathi

I really need finished measurements of every piece in a square like that so I undrestand. That is what I like about Bonnie Hunter patterns. I was not successful before I started making her patterns, the only thing is sometimes I get tired of so many little pieces.

That’s frustrating to have to interpret the instructions. Hopefully you can salvage the block because it turned out beautifully. Hopefully the rest of the instructions will be much clearer.
