Not much happening here this week! A little more quilting, some knitting, and some volunteer work for the children’s department at the library (at home).
My quilting time will be cut into today while I cut circles with a little gadget Melanie brought to me to get some things cut for art package kits that they make up for the kids – instead of game time/story time at the library they have been spending time this summer making up art kits for the kids to do. Parents pick the kits up and take them home. Photos are taken or short videos and upload them to the kids department to share. I believe the circles I will be cutting out are to be made into magnets for their refrigerators maybe? something like that everything is included in the kits. Because of the pandemic I was told I could do library volunteer work at home and just keep track of my time and Melanie will file it for me. Several layers of the paper are slide into the slot of the little punch hole thing and cut. Luckily I don’t have to use my fingers to work the punch – the palm of my hand will work. I am sure I will do some – take a break, do more etc – two days to work on it. Always such easy work – but it takes up a lot of their time so that is why they need volunteers to do this kind of stuff.
A little work on the sweater – almost ready to show some of it off but I need to block it first
And a little more progress on Alaska – not a lot but every little bit helps right. I just haven’t been feeling like putting in a lot of time on quilting lately – I really think I burned myself out by quilting so much from November to June!! Time to go a little slower and if it doesn’t get done in time for Christmas – it doesn’t! I think I need to roll the frame one more time and then quilt all the way across and it will be a quarter way done – not really sure but somewhere in that range.
I started another book by Sandra Dallas – “Tall Grass” a little slow starting but I think I will like it. We get rain and cold front coming in this week!! rain off and on all week – temps in the low to mid 80s and 60s at night – and less humid – we are all so ready for that.

It’s nice that you can help Melanie from home. I’m sure she appreciates you doing this for her. Our children’s librarian, Ian, is doing storytimes in the park this summer, so we have been making up bags of books for him to give away to the kids. They are encouraged to keep them or swap them. We Friends of the Library have a lot of stuff in the book sale room that we are sorting and even storing at the print shop across the street. We won’t be having a book sale for quite some time. The library is going to open by appointment next week (I think) for computer users and has expanded its curbside pick up.
Hope you enjoy Tallgrass. Our visit to the Amache camp in southern CO was very interesting even though there’s almost nothing left. There is a very sweet little cemetery there, one dormitory, and one guard tower. The rest has returned to prairie, except the roads are still there.
The rain and cooler temps have been nice, it’s still a bit sticky when it’s not raining. But I’ll be happy with the cooler temps. You get a lot done most weeks, sometimes I think we all need a reset point where we don’t focus as much on the stitching.
That looks like a nice volunteer job to be able to do from home. I was working one afternoon a week at a kids’ after school program here, and of course, it shut down when the schools closed in March. I’m not sure what will happen to it now, but I am not planning to go back. All that to say – something I could do from home would be welcome! It’s always nice to get a little something done – on the sweater, on the quilt – even if it’s just a little. Good to have a variety of things to do throughout the day!
Clever idea for art kits for the kids. It’s interesting to see how different organizations are making the social distancing/sheltering work. Glad you can do the work at home too. I think it’s good you are taking a break and just enjoying different things. The quilting mojo will come back, I’ve no doubt about that!
Ive been very lazy as the humidity has been high and although the temps below normal it still zaps me. It’s nice that you have that volunteer work to keep you going.
Even slowing down on the hand quilting I bet you will have it done by Christmas. It will just take some cool fall weather to get enthused and energized again.
I’ve always enjoyed Sandra Dallas books. Her characters always seem wonderfully real. Our library has not been open since April. So, so disappointing for lots of people and of course, the summer reading program for the kids just didn’t happen at all. I have a backpack full of books and they still won’t even let us even put them in the drop box!
I’m sure Melanie and the other library staff so appreciate your volunteer work! Those papers are as pretty as fabrics! The sweater is looking really nice! And I have no doubt that you have other Christmas quilts if Alaska isn’t finished in time. Also? Imho, Alaska doesn’t have to be a Christmas quilt. The reds and greens are far enough off from traditional Christmas colors that I wouldn’t hesitate to use it during other times of the year.
It’s good that you can still volunteer while staying at home!
