A Little Here A Little There

Little by little things get done even if it doesn’t look like much progress is made at time.  The Morning Glory quilt still looks the same but I am part way done with the 3rd side and for my Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy I will take more stitches on that blue strip all the way around and work on my quilting in the evening too.  Also linking to Quilting is More Fun than Housework — Life in Pieces —

Alaska from Friday night

Five mask done for Aniya’s family – I am sending the t-shirt loops home with them to string through the casing themselves so they can get the fit right and then we will see how many more they want.

IMG_8814

In case you are wondering about the loops I cut the t-shirt off under the arm holes of an old soft t-shirt of Mike’s so I have a large rectangle of fabric – cutting the seam off – then I cut the strips at about 3/8” inch – you gently pull the strip one at a time through your fingers to stretch them out.  This makes “elastic” – fit the loop around the ears of the person that will wear it – cut the piece and tie a knot in it and then stuff the knot into the casing if you desire so it is out of the way.  I do have elastic ordered but it won’t come until late next week.

The three Early Girl tomato plants are covered in tomatoes that will be ripening quickly now – two of the plants in the pots are now taller than I am (5’7”) they are tied to tall stakes.  The Romas are beginning to blossom  – those are the ones I planted from seed in March and they are about 3 to 4 feet tall now – with this heat and me watering them almost every day they will have fruit before you know it.  After seeing how fast the tomatoes grow from seed I might just do that and start in February instead putting them in little pots that can then be transplanted into larger pots at the end of March or April.  I had the Roma’s in very small pots then transplanted into – maybe 4” pots? then into the large 5 gallon buckets and they grew so fast in the past two to three weeks it is amazing.

The cucumber plants hanging from the pot (I think I have two plants in it) are doing ok – I wasn’t sure how they would do but they are not too heavy as I’m sure it is one large root ball in that pot now – one more in a pot sitting on the deck it is not doing as well!  There will not be a lot of cucumbers but enough that I have not bought a cucumber in several weeks

Melanie will come over for a little bit this afternoon and I will give her some tomatoes, oregano from the garden and a cucumber or two if she wants.  I think I will glue baste another hexie diamond while she is here I haven’t worked on them this week.

I have been making masks too. I still have a little bit of elastic left. Alaska looks wonderful! I have only had one tomato so far but there are lots of green ones on the plant. My herbs are going crazy…I need to make more basil pesto today and freeze it. Have a great visit with Melanie. Another hot day here.

Progress on both projects, even if it’s hard to show in a photo, is always good! We’ve liked the t-shirt loops for our masks, too – especially if they have to be worn for quite awhile. I can’t believe your tomato plants are so tall – wow! I must have gotten some kind of more bushy plant – there are tons of green tomatoes on it, but it hasn’t grown very tall. Have a nice visit with Melanie today!

I always love seeing your progress–your quilts are beautiful. And what a nice garden! Mine is a little slow this year. Have a good week!

Your tomato plants are looking much healthier than mine. Sigh. Your quilts are looking great and I like those masks. I have been busy making some more also. I was able to get elastic about a month ago.

This just seems to be the year for gardening. Things are growing like crazy here. You are keeping up well with your projects. Glad you have time with Melanie too; social visits are so much more precious now.

You’ve had a good week on the stitching front. Making progress on 4 different projects is pretty impressive.

The blue border compliments the applique center. Alaska seems to be stitching up quick…easy for me to say. I’ve made similar masks and with t-shirt elastic. Softer on the ears. Enjoy your family time.

Thanks for a look into your life. Love the hanging cucumbers.

Beautiful quilts, beautiful masks, and your garden looks great. I planted tomatoes and peppers late, but hopefully they will be coming up shortly. I too used pots and have been watering them daily.

Beautiful quilting and what gorgeous tomatoes. I was too late to plant any this year, but hopefully next year! Have a great week!

Karen, So glad to catch up with all you are doing this week. I love seeing your quilt on the frame making progress… and Morning Glory folded so you can grab it and work on it when you are watching the news or whatever in the evenings… I am glad your cucumbers grew from hanging baskets.. that is nice! Rick loves pickles and we talk about growing cucumbers but neither of us know how to make pickles… so we just chat about it! lol
I hope you and your daughter have a nice visit this afternoon. I like the masks you are making for Aniya and her family and letting them cut the cording is perfect! This may be more comfy than true elastic too!
Have a nice week ahead my friend! Kathi

The masks look great! As does Alaska! That’s a good crop of tomatoes too. I was out today and was given a piece of cake made with courgette and lime, it was delicious!

  • Michelle Jul 19, 2020 @ 17:05

The masks look great – as do your tomatoes and cucumbers!

Hello Karen, you amaze me with the amount of work you get down, you must be up and at it early in the morning. I need to organise my time a bit better. Your quilts are so beautiful. I love the hexie diamond project. Keep well Love Mandy xx
