Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

After thinking about this hexie quilt for a while now I am thinking I might want to not make it large!  I have so many large quilts and many more to make but I already have a quilt of this type that I made few years ago – so this one might end up being a table runner – not really sure yet – I put it back on the wall in a narrow format – I would need to make one more diamond and then if I want the sides to be straight I would be making half diamonds to finish it off and that might be as far as I want to go with it.  I’m going to give it a couple days to think about it.

there are other hexie quilts that I have seen that I more interested in making and only so much time left in my fingers for EPP – I find EPP a little hard on the fingers at time – do you all find that to be true?  I have made them hand pieced and EPP and between the two really I think I was faster hand piecing then EPP.

Here is one that I hand pieced and hand quilted finished in 2016 Diamonds are Forever – I couldn’t find a photo of it so I took this one from a previous post – this is the one that is close to the same design as the current but it has one row of white between colors where as the current one has 2 when joined – there is a Lucy -Patchwork of the Crosses on the quilt rack to the side and that one was hand pieced too – really I think hand piecing goes faster!  Most of the quilts are listed on the side bar but they are not always easy to find.  Another not shown but can be found on the sidebar is Handful of Scraps – that one was EPP

So anyhow – I will think it over in my mind and decide if I want to finish this current hexie project small or go large – right now it would be about 39 x 54 as shown in the first photo – and if I decide to make another hexie quilt I will certainly let you all know – in the meantime I will keep looking at ideas!

All those half-hexies will take some time, too. I love your big quilt, but I can also understand your desire to finish. That’s always the push-pull of these long term projects.

Your Handful of Scraps quilt is so pretty! I think I had just started reading your blog when you finished that one. I can understand making Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds into something smaller, too – EPP is a long haul project! I enjoyed the one little EPP project I made, but it felt like it took forever, and I was never very good at keeping the stitches invisible. I’ve really liked hand-piecing, though – maybe my next project for hand-piecing will get bigger yet. I saw in your posts about the Lucy Boston quilt that you hand – pieced it. It’s lovely!

Will be fun to see what you decide on Lucy in the Sky. I’ve only done a tiny bit of hand piecing and EPP, but I can understand why EPP would be hard on the fingers after doing several at a time. My hands are not nearly as happy when I am hand sewing as they used to be.

I am of the age that the hands wear out fast. Somedays (like Mondays) I spend way too much time on computers, tablets and phones. The thumb really dislikes that. I keep thinking I’m abusing my opposable thumb! But I have two or three hand appliqué blocks to do for one quilt so I need to give up computer surfing! Think about where you can use a runner from you EPP project. It’s always nice to have a place picked out in advance. Hope you can keep getting stitching time in this week.

Wow – this one is really beautiful.

I think it would be lovely to keep going just a bit longer and end up with a smaller quilt, like 54” square or 54×60. What a wonderful size to curl up in winter with while doing other appliqué or hand work! Though I imagine it would probably be stolen by one of your visiting girls right away 🙂
But I do mostly EPP these days, so all projects are multi year projects!

Perhaps it could live as a bed runner? Whatever, its gorgeous.

It would make a beautiful runner too, Karen! I haven’t done EPP, but I know hoe much I enjoy hand-piecing. (Funny how that doesn’t transfer over to appliqué.) I can be very accurate that way.

I was perusing Pinterest the other day and came across several Etsy shops selling the templates for the Alaska quilt. I’m not certain, but I think that would be a copyright infringement?

I like the idea of smaller since you already have a bigger one and seem to be ‘over’ this one. I tried EPP but found I prefer hand piecing. Love the lucy on the rack… I’ve had my eye on making one of those someday.

I think this would make a beautiful runner! I found EPP too hard on my hands but have no problems with hand piecing at all.

I would agree with the bed runner idea but it won’t be long enough. Here are some off-the-wall suggestions: quilted jacket ( at the probable waste), Christmas tree skirt, multiple quilted scarves, a l-o-n-g pillow for a bed or bench, or maybe multiple window valences. Remember, I said they’re off-the-wall. I marvel at people’s EPP work because I just don’t have the patience. Yours are absolutely beautiful.

Haha, I actually checked the date on your post ’cause I thought maybe an old post from Diamonds Are Forever got re-published. I definitely like hand piecing better than EPP — you’re a glutton for punishment LOL. It’s sure pretty though!

Oh I think Lucy will look fabulous on your table! And your Diamonds OMG simply gorgeous!

Hand sewing is the worst for me. Year ago I did a lot of needle turn applique, now my fingers lock up on me. Your hexies are beautiful.

  • Kathy Swallows Jul 29, 2020 @ 5:34

Love those hexie diamonds. No matter what you decide, it’s going to be a lovely finish.

    Hi Karen,
It will make a lovely table runner, and then you can finish up more of your projects……anyway that is the way I am thinking on my projects….at my age it is time to “get er done!” Your hexies are so pretty. I haven’t made a hexagon quilt yet, and I always admire the work in them. Both of yours are beautiful. Thanks for linking with Design Wall Mondays, Judy
