Working on the RSC Challenge

Here it is almost the end of the month and I haven’t made my two dark blue blocks that I needed for this months challenge.  The more I thought about it though I decided to skip dark blue this month as I only have 8 more blocks to make and it is two of each color – I had four blue blocks in this quilt already so I decided to do red this month and maybe do blue later – but I think this quilt might have enough blue blocks in it already –

what I have so far

This one is ready to sew today – and I have the next one cut out and ready to go as well so maybe I can get both of them done today. RSC Country Charmer

All of the diamonds are off the wall now and stacked up and in a container – I need to decide if I want to continue the diamonds to a large quilt or make it a small quilt – I have recently seen several other hexie quilts that I might like to make and I can’t do hexies every day! A couple more rows on the sweater sleeve – if this is going to be for fall I better get hopping on it – but it is still so warm – but in the A/C it isn’t too bad

Melanie let me know that there was  call out for fabric and mask makers for children’s masks – I told her I would donate some fabric for the cause but I wasn’t making more for anyone not family, it just isn’t in me – there are plenty of sewers out there that seem to have this for their calling and they are welcome to it.  I got this fabric washed, dried and pressed and handed off to her yesterday afternoon at the library (masked up and didn’t stay more than 10 minutes for a quick tour of the remodeled library.  I think I had 4 yards of white there that can be the liner.

I showed the Christmas stitchery that Melanie had made for us that I am turning into a mini quilt – the border is added now – just the layering needs to be and a minimal amount of quilting to hold it together.  I do not plan to do fancy quilting – the stitchery is the focus.

And yes – I am really taking a couple days off of quilting Alaska

I’m doing red blocks for the RSC, too. I guess I’m not good at year-long projects. I get impatient. I’ve made 3-4 blocks all year and have enough for a quilt. So I’m planning to put the blocks together over the weekend. Your blocks look great! I think next year, I might make smaller blocks, like log cabin or pineapple. It does help me keep my scraps in order by handling a color a month.

When I added the dark blue to mine, Aidan mentioned there was too much blue! Good for you donating fabrics for the kids masks. I am also not a ‘mask maker’ other than for family. Pretty blocks all up on the wall.

Such cute fabric for the masks; I’m not making masks other than for a few friends and for my family. I haven’t even kept count of how many I’ve made. Melanie’s stitchery looks so nice framed in red. She does lovely work!

Sometimes two much of one color doesn’t work for the balance of your design, and I can see that would be true for your RSC stars blocks. Having a light blue row and a dark blue row for my zigzags made sense, though. I definitely think you should do what works for your quilt! I have some of those pink and blue birds in my stash, too! I bought it for the backing of a quilt one time and have been trying to get rid of the scraps ever since. I must have bought way too much!

There are so many interesting paper pieced projects….I can see the temptation to go small with the diamonds. I have a love/hate relationship with mask making, but donating fabric, and such cute fabric is a good thing to do when making them isn’t in the cards.

The stitching that Melanie did is so pretty!

Oh I agree on the stitchery being the focus! Perhaps some crosshatching????? I know you will come up with something perfect!

I had forgotten about the RSC quilt! I may see if I can manage to join in next year. Anyway, I can see why you are questioning more blues at this stage. My mom made masks for herself and Dan & me. Like you, when the call came out for mask makers, she donated fabric. It’s hard to have yarn in your lap in the summer. My granny squares have turned out to be the perfect project for that very reason. I have a vest I plan to start next. It should be cooler by then.

Sometimes you just have to have a break in the routine. Stay cool.

As always everything is just wonderful! Kudos on finishing the Appliqué on Morning. Sometimes we need a break. As soon as I binding the last table topper and make 3 bags for the wedding I am taking a sewing break for about 10 days! Vacation will see knitting time, but mostly I need a break from crafting.

Such a wonderful variety of projects to keep you busy during your quilting break!

I am loving your RSC blocks. Good for you, letting the RSC inspire you without controlling you completely. If you don’t want to add more blue, then you don’t have to! I am really loving the look of a quilt made up of just one block, but each one made up from different fabrics.
