The rest of my fabric that I ordered arrived – 8 yards of Moda Marble Black – if you have never used Moda Marbles let me tell you it is a good fabric to use as a background – the black is especially nice as it is not a solid slate of black but has texture in it. I’m not sure what size this Double Wedding Ring quilt will be that I plan to make so there might be plenty left over for the stash.
Seeing as I had it – I got started on a sample block – I always like to try out one block – especially if I am hand piecing as I want to make sure my seams are just right – I cut and marked a 1/4 inch seam and hand stitched. After I finished this melon I could tell that I need to make my seams just a little more scant than a 1/4 inch – I really had to ease it to get that melon made. Yes you can paper piece the arcs, you can EPP the whole quilt if you want to. Or you can do part by machine and part by hand. I’m not sure when I will get back to this – I just wanted to make one melon and see how my seams went for now.
I mentioned the other day that I searched for my hand quilting needles and couldn’t find any when I was sure I had some but I looked everywhere (I thought) and couldn’t find any so ordered more and got the notice today they have been shipped – so of course I found my needles, (too late to cancel the order)– in a plastic case in the sewing drawer where they should have been all along but I didn’t see them. Yesterday I went to the drawer to look for something else and low and behold by eyes went right to that plastic container LOL
See all these little vials of needles LOL – it turned out I ordered the wrong size – the next size up from my quilting betweens #11 that I use – I ordered #10 by mistake so they will be a little larger needle – just right for hand piecing and maybe they will be used for quilting too – who knows – I will have enough now to last several years at this rate.
A little more hexie work for today – just right for if the power goes out – we do have a generator and I could plug in my sewing machine but I usually can’t concentrate on machine work if we have a bad storm in process.
and more crochet too got done and perfect to keep hands busy while keeping up to date on the storm which probably won’t get here until late afternoon and be with us all night as well.
A little more quilting on Alaska
Right now they have the storm Laura coming over us with winds and rain – I am 75 miles west of Little Rock – in the path – everything is put away that can be put away, the generator and extension cords are ready – nothing else to do now but wait and see what happens – I feel for all those on the coast line and in land in Louisiana and Texas they will get much worse weather than we will. I will update on Friday if I internet.

Stay safe! I hope your power stays on. You have lots to keep your hand busy as you wait out the storm
Dear Karen,
Good luck, will say a special prayer for all of you. Your double wedding ring test block looks good. The black marble fabric is perfect. All the Moda marble colours work well in quilts. A few years back, I received a jelly roll with them and they blend with all the prints very well. Keeping busy with handwork always has a calming effect on me and makes us relax. Alaska will be done in no time!
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers today.
I will have to keep the Moda marble colors in mind. It definitely looks like something I would use as a background fabric.
I’ve been thinking of you and my friend the former state librarian of Arkansas during these days before the storm. Hope you all stay safe – and dry. It sounds like this will be a doozy.
I love your DWR with the black background, and, like you, I love Moda marbles. I made a great quilt once using a deep turquoise as the background and another one using the navy.
Take care!
Yes, you should have enough needles for a while! The DWR will be beautiful! Good luck with the storm. I hope you don’t get damage.
The jelly roll fabrics are perfect with the moda black. This is going to be a beautiful quilt! You are so wise to have a generator. We haven’t used ours yet this summer but it’s on standby. I don’t know if we’ll get much rain but we’re supposed to have 60 mph wind. We’ll find out tomorrow. Happy stitching!
I just love the fabric you are using for your dwr.. I have templates and I am glad you can stay focused.. I just am having issues with focus during this ongoing pandemic. So I read your blog or surf the internet a lot atm. I love your afghan progress and will be praying this storm settles once it gets on land but boy is Laura large! We are due to get rain and wind from this one too! Kathi
Smart to try a test block. Are you going to use brights in the final project? I’ll be thinking about you and my family in Conway. Their street frequently floods and they have to sandbag the front door. We are expecting remnants of the storm Friday night and Saturday.
Oh, that’s going to be a pretty double wedding ring! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve known I had something, couldn’t find it, figured I’d used it up or something, ordered more, and then found the thing – ha! At least you’re set with needles! I have so many needles, many of them from my grandmother’s and mother’s stash. I’ll keep you in prayer as the storm comes your way, Karen. Do take care!
I hope it is just a little wind and rain when it reaches you. Hope you all stay safe.
I’ve never had any Moda Marble fabric – I’ll have to look for it. Hand-piecing the Double Wedding Ring block sounds like a great idea! Now that I have more experience with hand-piecing, I know how much easier it is to sew curves that way. Your black with brights is going to be a pretty combination! I hope you don’t lose power due to the storms – I’ll be thinking about you!
Infuriating when you hunt high and low for something and can’t find it and then when you stop looking you find it! We’ve all been there. ?. Stay safe and definitely thinking of you!
Stay safe, can’t wait to hear from you on Friday. I know you’ll still get lots of sewing done despite the storm. Hope your plants ride out the storm well.
I love your afghan! What is the yarn what size hook are you are using? I would love to make one. I also love following your progress on the Alaska quilt and the diamond hexagons. I would like to make a similar quilt since I love hexagons. I hope the storm does not affect you much. Stay safe.
The back of you Lucy/Diamonds looks wonderful and so neat. I’m impressed and I now see that I need to step up my game. I’m new to epp. Thank you for sharing.
Stay safe
How often do you change the needle when you hand Quilt?
Oh Karen, I love love love the black and brights in your wedding ring sample. So gorgeous! Whenever we lose something, my husband says the best way to find it is to order another. I bet 80% of the time that’s true. Crazy!
Also, thanks for the tip about Moda Marbles!
Your double wedding ring quilt is going to be gorgeous in those colours. Good idea to try one block first. We will all be looking forward to seeing this one progress along, when you are ready to start, of course.
Karen nuevo comienzo se ve maravilloso, me encantan las telas que seleccionas.
Disfruto viendo las avances en tus acolchados.
Cuídate
Hope the storm doesn’t have much punch left. Love your crochet pattern. Very nice.
Karen, hope you and your husband stay safe. I am watching the weather channel….so much destruction. Prayers for all……..Love the hexies.
Thanks for the tip on the Mods Marbles……….I can’t wait to see the quilt…..survivor972002@midco.net
Your test block looks great. Those colors are going to pop against the black.
