- EDITED: our modem is new but now our internet is not working well – Mike has been on the phone and on line chat and they will not have a technician out until Friday to fix the line – a lot of the servicemen are in Louisiana due to the hurricane last week. I will blog when I can but it will not be on a regular basis for the week.
A bit of progress was made on Alaska since I last posted about this quilt – my phone is horrible to try to blog from and I wasn’t even going to try to do one photo – so glad to have a modem working. A series of 3 photos to show the progress:
Also I got the row attached that I was working on for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, next up will be to add a corner unit at the top of the long row and start to attach all those diamonds and then make the lower corner until. The top corner will have green in it.
I ordered one of these yarn “thingies” that you drape your yarn around and roll up into balls – I had been trying to drape it over the arms of my office chair and do it and then thought why I’m I do this when I can order one of these! I don’t wind yarn way as much as some of you do so that is why I have delayed getting one – I hesitant to purchase some things
When we lost the modem to lightening we had been in the midst of days of rain – we ended up getting close to 8 inches of rain over a couple days with a couple of dull dreary cloudy days before and after – the tomato plants were so soaked with water that the plants looked awful they started to have leaf’s that were turning yellow and black and after the rain finally got over I thought well those leaves had to come off – they looked like mold or something – I scalped my plants – I took off so much that it is barely anything but the stems that were holding the tomatoes on – well this be ok or not? I don’t know but these tomatoes are green as can be so I will let them stay on the plants as long as I can to get them closer to ripening – they are not even a tiny bit orange or red – I hope for the sun to come out and shine on them. There are at least 4 dozen on these and a couple more plants that are below them by the flowers maybe 6 dozen tomatoes in all – too much for the kitchen counter for now.

I am no longer affiliated with the site as when they changed to the new company that went away and I don’t know if I will able to be an affiliate or if they even have that program. But I wanted to update you all well I thought of it as I had just went to the site yesterday and found out the new information.

Glad you got your modem replace.. and glad 8″ of rain for you doesn’t equate to a flooding situation 🙂 That is a LOT of rain!
I am enjoying this free time to view Craftsy videos and even lets you download the instructions and patterns for accomplishing the classes for quilting at least 🙂
I love your Alaska progress and that yarn rolling machine is quite unique! I hope your tomatoes ripen just right.. they sure look yummy on the vine green! Kathi
Welcome back!
I did check out the new Craftsy but with so much online stuff these days – I have two conferences to attend this month and weekly yoga – I doubt I will take any classes until winter at least. I miss the fabric and notions they used to sell. Loved the thread in particular. I tried Connecting Threads’ thread and hated it, so I’m sticking with Aurifil after my Craftsy thread is gone.
Good to see you back and posting. Eight inches is a lot of rain! Sure hope your tomatoes ripen; I have no advice to give, however. Thanks for the tips on the new Craftsy site; I’ll have to go check it out.
That is a lot of rain! Hmmm. You could always make fried green tomato’s? Hopefully they will ripen for you. Maybe put something red near them? I think it is an old wives tale but it can’t hurt to try it.
Such odd weather we’re all having, considering it’s still summer! I hope yours dries up and the tomatoes ripen on their own. My plant has maybe 10 tomatoes on it and they’re nowhere near ripened, so I’m wondering the same as you – what to do with them if we do have a hard freeze Monday night? Both Alaska and the Diamonds are moving along! Love seeing them both – so pretty!
Your tomatoes should still ripen, but *may* not be quite as tasty as if the plants had more leaves. But they will still be far better than store bought ones! My tomato plants had almost all leaves blown off and smashed by a tree limb in the derecho, but the tomatoes that stayed on the plants are still ripening, and the plants are putting out more leaves at the very tops. With all that rain, you might consider spraying for fungus – there’s a spray you can mix up that uses powdered milk of all things that seems to work.
I’ve thought about getting a yarn swift, but as rarely as I do yarn projects, using a lamp shade suffices for my needs. I do keep an eye out for one at thrift shops, garage & estate sales though.
Good to see you back on line. We are so dependent on having internet in our homes today that we really miss it!
In a cooking demo I attended several years ago the chef made a cobbler with chopped up very green tomatoes mixed with another fruit. I was amazed but it was delicious. I would definitely recommend trying this idea.
Lucy and Alaska are both looking great. I’m glad you’ve taken care of your modem issue and you’re connected to the Universe once again! That yarn contraption looks like something that, if I came across it in an attic or a garage sale, I’d have absolutely no idea what it was for. Why do you roll yarn into balls? Doesn’t it already come in balls? Or does it come in a skein that gets tangled as you’re knitting, like embroidery floss? Enquiring non-knitter minds want to know… 🙂
Glad to see you’re back in business. I missed you. I hope the tomatoes will recover but who knows? We’re having days without rain but its humid. Looks like our temps are headed down a little bit. How is hubby doing?
The Alaska quilt is going along really well! And you are almost halfway on the hexies! 8 inches of rain! Ugh! I think if the sun comes out your tomato plants will start making new leaves, which ought to help the tomatoes. At least it seems when my mom cuts hers way back, they come back stronger than ever. Fingers crossed!
So close and yet so far! It is only when you don’t have Internet you realise how much it’s used! Your yarn thingy looks interesting. Do you rewind all your wool?
I take a lot of leaves off my tomato plants nearing the end of the season because all of the suckers at the intersections start dying. They say your plants do need leaves to produce properly but as close as we are to fall I think yours will be OK. I haven’t had many ripening the last week or 10 days either.
Oh that is way to much rain! Mildew and yellowing leaves are a sure sign they are not happy! Hope your tomatoes don’t sunburn!
I have bought quite a bit of yarn while we are in WI. If you ever come up here again, you need to go to Nina’s in Spring Green. It’s like a little old fashioned “variety” store and she has some great yarn and always a nice selection on sale. So, I’m looking at getting a yarn swift when we get back home. All of this yarn will need to be wound – someday. I found a yarn winder for $2.00 at the same estate sale where I bought my Featherweight for $50.00. I’ve now used both on this extended trip, so I’m glad I bought them. Seeing your green tomatoes, my mom had a recipe for green tomato pickles that she made when my grandpa would plant too many and they didn’t all ripen before the cold weather came in. Maybe you can find a recipe. I don’t know where her’s is. It’s supposed to be with the stuff from her house that is in my garage, but looking for them just isn’t a priority right now. I need to find them one of these days, though. My sister keeps asking for them.
I can’t imagine now have a swift and ball winder! But then I buy a lot of hanks and not much in the way of skeins. My kids used to think it was fun to wind the yarn, until they were faced with winding 4-5 hanks! Then it wasn’t so much fun anymore. LOL
It is such a pain when the Internet doesn’t work well. Hopefully the tomatoe plants will survive. We didn’t get any rain out of that system. Hopefully you had a really dry weekend. You’ve been moving along on both your hand stitching projects.
