How do you sew your Drunkard’s Path blocks – do you pin it to death or no pins like I do?  Doing it this way might sound hard but it really isn’t.  After you take the initial 3 or 4 stitches hold you top fabric up a little bit as you go around the curve stitching slowly and it just works out.  Linking to Midweek Makers —Wednesday Wait Loss —

When you get close to the end use long tweezers to hold the ends together.

I used to have a “curvemaster” foot for doing curves on my old machine. Now I have a 1/4″ piecing foot and do the same thing you do to sew curves. No pins, hold the parts up, use tweezers at end. Works great!
I love the way your Drunkard’s Path is coming along!

Oh my gosh, I just saw a blogpost saying that you were slowing down and then I see you started all these Drunkard’s Path blocks. There is no slowing you down 🙂 I have not sewn curves in a very long time. I believe I kept the concave piece on the top and stitched slowly. Tried both with pins and without but I don’t remember which I preferred 🙁

I don’t use pins either, and use the same process as you except for the tweezers (great tip). It’s all looking good, Karen!

I’ve sewn improv curves, but never a Drunkard’s Path block cut with a ruler or die like yours, so I was interested to see how you do it. I imagine that little notch helps line things up, too. Not having to pin probably speeds things up. Your quilting on Country Charmer is moving right along! What’s your plan for quilting the blocks?

Lovely blocks. I avoid curved piecing.

  • Carol Apr 28, 2021 @ 8:20

I use a glue stick on curves— it really improved my results and sped things up 1000%

    Dear Karen,

That is a neat and easy way to do those curves. Using the tweezers at the end is a super idea.

On the few curves I’ve done, I used a pin at the center so those lined up. And one at the last end. Then I used a bamboo skewer to keep nudging things into place. Your method, or the glue stick sounds much easier.

Love how you are sewing the drunkard path blocks. I am a ‘wing it without pins’ person so if I decide to machine stitch mine, I’ll do the same as you. Love that the pieces are accurate and have that middle line up notch. They are looking great on the wall.

Lovely blocks and curves. I sew mine with freezer paper, then glue. It looks a lot of steps but much more easier for me 😉

I love the way Lucy is looking with the binding. And Country Charmer is looking so good! I;ve never done Drunkard’s Path blocks on the machine. Your method looks pretty slick.

Lucy looks so very good! Very sweet.:) And I use tweezers at the bottom part of a drunkards path unit myself. Works so well! I do use one pin in the middle though I’ve tried it without. Just a better curved seam line for me and the way I sew.

Lots if lovelies to look at today. I’m afraid that I’m a little scared if curved piecing so generally tend to Void it.

  • JanineMarie Apr 28, 2021 @ 17:34

I love the fan and grid quilting on Country Charmer and the overall look of Lucy with the gray binding. I’ve only done circular curves a few times, and knowing me, I probably pinned them to death. Ha!

  • Jennifer Apr 28, 2021 @ 18:00

I tend to use three pins in my drunkards path blocks but I’m living the idea of using tweezers! Love love Lucy and can’t wait for the finish. Love your Country Charmer blocks too, and of course the Drunkards Path. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

Bright and cheerful DP blocks. I’ve sewn NYB blocks and yes, pinned them to death and go slow over the pins! lol I have to practice on not using pins. Thanks for sharing your method.
