After an initial misstep on drawing the stencil design on the border I got busy with the border on Country Charmer and got quilting. I did start in the middle instead going to the opposite border from normal as I needed to spritz the border out on the right side as the stencil had slipped out of space and I hadn’t noticed it. (I did get that side drawn on yesterday afternoon). The quilting doesn’t show up really, really clear in the black area – but that is to be expected – glad I’m using a light color thread though so it would show up as it is.
The quilting completed on Wednesday night
The actual quilting doesn’t show clear on the black area but you can see where it is quilted. I am using Tuscany 100% cotton batting. Linking to Wendy’s Quilts and More – (she has beautiful quilts from a show to share today). Also linking to Alycia Quilts Finished or Not—
The thread is #12 aurifil – the thick stuff
I always like to stand back and look at the whole thing – yes I will like this border design!
Most of the above was done on Wednesday evening with some of the drawing yesterday. I also got the rest of the first half of the drunkard’s path pieces cut out – yes a lot more to go but I will enjoy some of the piecing first. The blocks are 6.5 inches and I think I did five of them just to remind myself of the method I use for piecing these blocks – no pins needed! It’s all in the way you hold the pieces.
This is the design I am looking at right now – although everywhere on this that is white would actually be a very scrappy light colored mix of pieces. I could still change my mind but I need to make up my mind soon so I put together the right amount of light/dark needed per shape.

Pretty flowers growing in the garden – I had written a name on the garden tag and it went and faded so much in the sun that I can no longer read it – I will need to get the plant ap out tomorrow and snap another photo with it.

I hope you can find that flier in your database
Enjoy deciding on a pattern for your drunkards path blocks!

Great start on the border! I’ll have to look for #12 aurifil for a small wallhanging I’m planning. Do you use a regular quilting needle, and if so what #?
I love those little white flowers – Star of Bethlehem! I had them two houses ago and even brought some along to the old B&B. But I had no place for them in this house when we moved and no time to dig them up. So I should look for the corms sometime and get them planted. It’s always such a nice surprise to see them bloom.
We had snow the last couple of days, so any tree that was blooming (particularly a northern Magnolia) has lost its blossoms. I’m afraid my tulips have had it. 🙁
That’s a pretty design for the border quilting, and I love the thread, too! I haven’t used many variegated threads for quilting, but I really like the look of that Aurifil. Those are pretty flowers! Hope you figure out what they are.
The 12 wt thread really stands out! The border quilting design looks great. Pretty flowers
Is quilting with the 12 wt thread easier on your hand? Just wondering if it goes through the layers easily. I’ve done a little hand quilting with it (big stitches) and liked the look quite a bit.
The quilting design in the border of Country Charmer is beautiful. What a great choice!
Dear Karen,
WOW, what a beautiful border that is and it suits your quilt perfectly! Country Charmer is going to be a beauty! Love the flowers, saw a patch flowering recently on the front of one of our neighbours gardens. They are beautiful. Your next quilt is started.
That stencil is wonderful! Looks great so far.
I really like that quilting design. Gonna be a beauty for sure. I have a ton of # 12 and a considerable amount of # 8 threads but I use mine mostly for wool applique and embroidery. It would be perfect for quilting when you want the quilting to be more visible.
I hadn’t thought about #12 as a thread for quilting, though it’s becoming increasingly popular for counted thread since it looks good on most mid range fabric counts with a single strand. Love that border design – the checkerboard portion really relates well to the block design.
Plant markers… another (yet) undone project for me. I was going to use metal stamps on strips cut from beverage cans or roof flashing – no fading that way. Somehow I never remember to get the strips cut before I’m out and about weeding. Then I think about it as I wonder “plant or weed?”
I like that border pattern. For some reason, I usually think each border “should” be done separately. Discarding that thought (rut?) would open up many more possibilities.
Great choice for your border! The small squares echo the 9 patches and there are also some softening curves. Nice!
LOVE the border you have chosen for Country Charmer! The Drunkard’s Path I made years ago used the pattern you’ve tentatively chosen. Mine was composed of light and dark blues. I loved it. It was one of my early ones, and tied. Sadly the tying was really adequate to preserve it for long. That little flower is so sweet!
I’m with everyone on this, the border is a great pattern. How are you choosing which colours to put together for the drunkards path block?
Oh wow!!! Country Charmer is awesome and that border – oh la la!!
Ooh — I LOVE this border design!!! So glad you’re quilting it in a showy thread to display the quilting to dramatic effect. This will be gorgeous!
That quilting is creating some lovely texture!
