A Busy Tiring Day

Yesterday I got one block for the Hunter’s Star done in the morning and then we were gone the rest of the day – Mike had a meeting he wanted to go to in Little Rock concerning a local issue he is involved in and I had a quilt that was on consignment at the State Historic Museum gift shop that hadn’t sold and I needed to pick it up – truthfully I had forgotten for awhile that they even had it LOL – they had it for about 4 years and then covid hit and I forgot to have them renew the contract and they were closed for about a year I think and then things came back slowly and all of a sudden when the gift shop manager was going through paper work as she is getting ready to retire it is like this contract hasn’t been renewed and we still have her quilt.  After four years it was time to go get it back.  While in the shop I saw they still had 2 quilts of mine that I sold to them outright.  I can’t believe how they do business.  You set a price on the items you sell to them that are under $300 and they pay you outright and then they double the number (not matter size or product) and that is their price they charge.  Both of these quilts are small quilts and they were trying to get $350 for one and $450 for the other – you can see them hanging on the wall here folded in half.  Good luck to them for selling at those prices I would have cut the price years ago – one of them they have had since 2008!!  I have sold 37 quilts at that shop over the last 20 years – 5 of them were large queen sizes on consignment – this 6th one is the only one that hadn’t sold.   Everything in the museum shop is made in Arkansas by Arkansas artist/crafters – I was listed as a “textile artist”  I liked that title LOL

This is the one that didn’t sell – Winter Wonderland – I’m sure they didn’t have it displayed well as others sold that were smaller and not made as well – but of course the price was smaller.  The priciest one I sold on consignment I got $1,100.00 I don’t remember what it sold for – close to $2,000.00 I believe.  I quit selling though – too much work and too much trying for perfection.

Oh well – now to find a home for it – Hunter’s Star from yesterday –

Joining the others on the wall – one more to make today and on to the next RSC quilt – nine more blocks to make but will need two more to make it even so I will just pick out two more random colors for extra blocks in October.

Pricing things to sell is really difficult. I try to figure out a potential cost of the fabric and then maybe cut it down a bit. I don’t usually figure in my time as that would raise the price tremendously. But of course it’s supplies + time = the real value.

    Dear Karen,
Winter Wonderland is beautiful. Their loss your gain. It was meant to come back to you. We had rain up north last night, the humidity is high and it is hot again today, so we can expect more rain. Love letters is almost finished, wow!
    Have a great day.

You ARE a textile artist! Those look like beautiful quilts, and it’s too bad they haven’t sold. I love the Winter Wonderland one – with the embroidered center it would be quite a keepsake for someone. You’re moving right along on the Hunter’s Stars – such a pretty design!

I’m glad you brought Winter Wonderland back home. It’s one of my favorites. I have the pattern, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I’ve decided I’m a pattern collector, more so than a quilt maker. ? your other quilts are beautiful too. I’m sure it was bittersweet to see them again.

The trouble with selling quilts is that they really are worth the prices this shop is trying to get for them given the hours of handquilting on top of everything else, but most people just don’t understand the effort and are not willing to pay those prices. I love the quilts they still have. And the one you picked up is awesome. Textile artist is right!

Ha! I forgot orange was not only the next color, but the last color. I’ve started sewing the purple blocks. I *might* be caught up by the end of the month.

Wow- what a beautiful quilt. They sure do have an interesting pricing markup. The Stars are looking great on the wall. I need to pull some oranges out today to play.

Winter Wonderland is beautiful! I like that title too, and it’s very true of you. You have had great success with selling your quilts, and what lucky buyers!

Of course you are a textile artist! Winter Wonderland is gorgeous, why dont you keep it and use it at Christmas time? I love quilts with a mixture of stitchery and piecing.
