I told the Fat Quarter Shop I would get this out before I took off for vacation. This pattern will be released later this month around the 27th and so will the kit that can be ordered.
The fabric I used was provided by the Fat Quarter Shop – I select Lazy Afternoon layer cake by Zen Chick and a cream color Bella Solid junior jelly roll. The fabric should be released soon it is a new line.
The pattern is very easy to make and is aimed at beginners or someone who wants an easy quilt to whip up for a fast gift. I first cut all my pieces and then lined them up on the table for piecing. The layer cake pieces are cut down a little leaving you some scraps – the pattern can be made in the small size I did, twin, queen or king. The quilt I made is 63 x 63 inches. The pattern is called Layer Cake Tumble
Once I got all the blocks made up on the design wall they went – stand back and look and sure enough LOL I had two blocks the same next to each other.
That got changed around a little and then it was a matter of just sewing the blocks into rows and the rows sewed together.
I did have to machine quilt so I could get the quilt done on time and yes I know more and more of my smaller quilts probably will have to start to be done by machine to save my hands and I do intend to start doing that next year I think. (but there will always be one on the hand quilting frame.
Even with the bar on the walking foot my lines got off – practice, practice!
After I washed and dried it it became a little crinklier – I have linked to Wendy’s Quilts and More
The backing – from the stash.

The serpentine stitch you used really looks great with this simple pattern. Well done!
What a cute and fast quilt! Have fun on your trip.
What a cute quilt!! I forgot about the bar that we can use on the walking foot. I really like how you machine quilted this one.
That is a fun design and definitely looks like it would be fast to put together! I like the mellow colors of that fabric line you chose, too. The machine quilting you did is perfect for the design – I love that serpentine stitch! Now that you’ve made a quilt like that for the Fat Quarter Shop, would you do it again?
This turned out nice, the serpentine quilting looks great. I’m using that stitch myself a lot lately.
That is a lovely quilt. I love the serpentine stitch and the crinklieness of a recently washed quilt! And, congratulations for finishing before your vacation – which I hope you enjoy.
That will be a quick to make pattern for sure. Good to keep in the back of ones mind for a fast needed gift or donation quilt.
Just lovely, Karen! It’s such a happy quilt. It’s a cool pattern, and yes good for beginners or if you are in a hurry. The size you made would be great for a young child. I am pinning this post.
It came out beautifully! I’m sure FQ Shop will be very pleased. Thanks for sharing.
Have a great weekend, hope your weather is enjoyable.
Well done. It’s a nice quilt for a layer cake. I imagine it is hard to keep serpentine stitches a consistent distance apart because, yea, they snake around. (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.) But I really like the look of the stitch and how it looks perfect for this quilt top. And, off you go on vacation. Enjoy yourself.
Cute quick quilt!!! I love all the Zen Chic fabrics!!!
I love this info and display with Lazy Afternoon & the finish photos of Lsyer Cake Tumble!!! The backing is spectacular too that you chose!
Awesome post Karen!
Glad you are liking your travel craft bag! Hope you enjoying your travels!!!

What a pretty quilt! The fabrics really made it shine. That photo of it on the garden bench is the money shot! I like your machine quilting, very neat. That pattern is similar to one I made years ago called Tumbling Charms.
That’s a great little quilt. With the right layer cake, I can see it as everything from a baby quilt to a Quilt of Valor!
Have fun on your vacation! Safe travels.
That’s a pretty fabric collection and a lovely quilt. It looks soft and cuddly.
