Not much got done yesterday other than baking. I got the girls favorite cookies made – Golden Thumbprints with raspberry jam and Mike’s favorite plain old chocolate chips. Therefore I was in the kitchen most of the day it seems which is good as with as cold as it was outside the oven was helping to heat the house I finished off the afternoon putting a meatloaf and baked potatoes in the oven for supper. I admit to eating a few of these cookies as they were coming out of the oven! The link goes to a recipe exactly like what I use but mine was in an old cookbook from years ago now I have a type written copy in a binder. Another cookie make every year but didn’t get a photo of are Viennese Sugar Twist I found a duplicate recipe here.
And some chocolate Chips – I follow the recipe on the back of the package
While I was baking it started to do this! The morning started at 42 degrees by 1pm it was in the 20’s last night as I was writing this at 8pm it was down to 8 degrees.
We didn’t get a lot of snow – I didn’t get a photo of the birds at the feeders I had only recently put the feeders out and added one to the backyard too that I can see from the kitchen – they finally found it when it started to snow, the other feeders are in their usual spot out the sewing room window but I hadn’t taken the screen out of the window to clear shots and didn’t take any photos of them.
Quilting from Wednesday night
And here
A couple thread basted hexies while waiting for cookies to bake. I moved them to my larger board so I could space them out right.
I really do hope I get back to the border on Rainbow Crossings this week sometime otherwise it will be the mad dash to get it finished next week – which could do of course as the baking sessions will be done!
Thank you all that have ordered through my affiliate links this year I do appreciate it and see several in the last couple days have been enjoying the sales at the Green Fairy – I love this company,

Goodness me the weather in USA is ferocious! It’s all over our news. Those cookies look delicious btw. Merry Christmas!
The cookies look really yummy. My Guy did most of his baking on Monday, but he has more to do today. Grad Girl will also be baking a bit today. The cold hit us sometime early yesterday. When I got up it was 11, just an hour or so later it was down to zero. Hope the rest of your holiday prep goes smoothly. Stay warm!
Your cookies look yummy! I attempted some cut-out sugar cookies yesterday and had a fail. They spread out and got completely flat in the pan, and got really brown. It was so strange. I suspect it’s because I used butter instead of shortening in them, which I didn’t realize would make such a difference. We had super low temps all day yesterday, and this morning it’s -14. Supposed to get a little better today and then more towards normal tomorrow. Hope you don’t get too cold!
Your cookies look yummy. I made cookies over the weekend. Tomorrow is cake baking day — only one cake though. I’m hoping to get some studio time too. I wish you could keep the cold weather but we are headed into the deep freeze today. 8 degrees seems to be the coldest it will get sometime on Saturday. And a week from Sun. it’s suppose to be 65. Welcome to the weird weather of the MidAtlantic region.
Thank you for the thumbprint cookie recipe. I have been doing more baking this Christmas than in recent years and the scales are showing it. It was 15 degrees here this morning.
Your cookies look delicious! Baking when it is cold is indeed a good idea!
Your weather sounds exactly like ours. I think you might have got a touch more snow, but snow it did for 2 or 3 hours off and on. I tracked the temperature dropping during the day – 41 at 8:15am down to 7 right before we went to bed at 10. It was 8 when we got up this morning and now is 11. Forecast is 22 today and not above freezing until Christmas day.
Merry Christmas!
Snow!!! The wind is blowing here. Yesterday the temp was in the 60’s, we are supposed to be down to 11 by tonight! Crazy! Your cookies look yummy! Enjoy!
Woke up to 7 degrees today with an expected high of 10. Brrr. But it’s sunny. The bitterly cold temps are supposed to last just 3 days, and by next weekend be up to 60. Ha! I love those thumbprint cookies. My grandmother used to make them. I’m itching to start a new quilt. Need to go to look at my Accuquilt dies….
The storm really hit a large portion of the US. I was making Chex Mix last night and the oven was on for 2 hours. It really helps to heat the kitchen since I have the least baseboard hot water heat in that room.
The birds are really checking out the feeders here. You would think they would hunker down in the trees when it is so windy with snow blowing.
Merry Christmas Karen!!
That seems like exactly the right amount of snow! Baking is the perfect activity for such a day too. Merry Christmas!
Our daughter did her baking 2 weeks ago, and she’s doing some more today. We’ve been eating since the first batch 😉
I’m sitting here at 10am and it’s 4 degrees with a wind chill of -15.
