Half Square Triangles

I got busy yesterday for the next step to finish Arkansas Traveler.  Cut into 3 different white/very light cream fabrics (all of the white in this quilt is a mixture of who knows how many prints mostly very white) and got my pieces cut – the corners too.  I was told of several great links where the math is already figured out for you – how sweet is that – pretty good when you can be mathematically challenged like me LOL  I liked the link at this page – they had sizes of common blocks and the math all figured out for you on their download.  I cut my pieces just a little larger and will square up – wanted just a little bigger to be on the safe side.

I got started sewing the half square triangles onto the ends of the rows and will sew the rows together when I get done.  This is almost half.  This quilt will be rectangular for a change – I usually make them square but I just didn’t want to make one more row of blocks.  I think it will finish around 85 x 102 – double size?  Not sure.  Linking to Small Quilts and Doll Quilts —

When I get Arkansas Traveler done I need to get hexies cut for Noriko’s Star  I hadn’t forgotten the hexies just didn’t have the right colors cut for the big triangle area that comes next and thought to take a couple weeks break from it but I am pretty much ready to get back to work on it.  While I am cutting hexies I will  think about which RSC22 well go on the wall next to finish.  I did work on the knitting yesterday too but I’m not going to show it often – it will be moving slow – maybe once a week will actually show a little progress.

It looks like Arkansas is in for some snow on Tuesday into Wednesday.  From the way it looks Jessica will get a bit in the northern part of the state – maybe even 6 inches – here we will be lucky to get 1-3 inches the weather said.  Of course that might change by Tuesday – we will see.  I had some groceries to pick up yesterday anyhow so went ahead and got my stuff for the week and can stay home and enjoy looking at the snow if we get any.

When it comes to mathematic, that sounds like me too! I’m totally zero! lol Good the math is figured out already. I also cut pieces a little bit bigger and square up, to be on the safe side. Progress on quilting and pretty AT.

Cutting and sewing those setting triangles is not the most fun part of quilt construction, but it’s good to get it done! Pretty reds in your Crossings blocks – I like that one that looks like bricks. I’m up early for my first cataract surgery this morning, and hoping it doesn’t snow on us on the way up there. It’s supposed to be very cold here all week – I’m ready for spring!

Those are big triangles! But that is a big quilt. When I did setting triangles I looked online and let a chart do the math for me – isn’t it great! We are supposed to get a rain/snow mix tomorrow and stay above freezing, so nothing too exciting here. But we are getting our grocery run done today!

    Dear Karen,
It has been a snowy weekend and more snow expected this week. The temperatures have dropped up north as well. Did a grocery run as well and now we are set to hibernate once again. You have your knitting, a quilt you are quilting and many beautiful projects to keep you busy and relaxing indoors. Looking forward to seeing your Hexies. Have a great day.

Glad you came up with a workable solution. We had a dusting of snow this morning but our temps will be going up tomorrow and Wednesday.

I want snow; a very unlikely event in eastern NC. Glad you got your math brain in gear. Looks good!!

I am glad you found a site with the setting tri measurements! Thanks for linking it for us too, I downloaded it.

Your triangles look good. Besides your pretty quilting, I really enjoy seeing the fabrics up close. We are getting some snow now, but it isn’t sticking since we are at 33 degrees.

Glad you found a site with the info you needed. Many years ago I downloaded an app from Robert Kaufman called QuiltingCalc. It will do all sorts of calculations for you including setting triangles. Surprisingly it is still available although it hasn’t been updated. On the other hand it doesn’t really need to be as it works fine. You are making great progress on your projects.

Just a treat for the eye!! All of your projects are so pretty!

Some people with footboards on their bed frames use that size rectangular quilt sideways on a queen bed. It will be a great top quilt for cold nights on any size bed.

I always make the setting triangles bigger….saves me from any angst and makes the trimming work out just nice!

  • Jenny Benton Jan 23, 2023 @ 15:40

Yes, cut the setting triangles bigger then trim them to size once sewen in place. That’s what I do too.

I like those sites for doing the hard work 9f figuring out sizes. AT looks great. Can’t wait to see which set of blocks come out to play next.

Thank you for the link to the site on the setting triangles. I have the formula in one of my books, but I can never remember which one. You’ve done well on keeping all your projects moving. I did an early trip to Walmart to pick up a few essentials since we may get some snow as well. It looks like it will be more significant south of us. Stay warm!
