Ready to get this section started – all 146 hexies for the big triangle are thread basted – watching movies and visiting provided the time needed. I did try to count the pieces in this quilt recently and although I might have double counted here or there or missed a few right now from the last photo I showed of this quilt plus all the pieces that go around that I have been sharing on this border -when this border is finished I think it will be 3,100 pieces in it – plus two more big borders that go around this – so maybe 6000 when I am done? I need to put it on a chart so I will not have any recounting to do (if I feel like it) – Linking to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching – somehow I think I will be stitching hexies again today, also linking to Cynthia’s Quilting is More Fun than Housework — Kate’s Life in Pieces.
I got started on one little section but I need to lay them out to get the color selection in the order I want. I usually get the big flannel board out for that but can’t do that right now with the house more crowded than usual. I might try to organize them on the small board in some way – Jessica and her dog will be here most of the day today and Melanie will be over for awhile as well. Two days of cleaning the house and getting ready to head to Paducah and the quilt show on Wednesday.
This is the piece Melanie is working on – but she was kind of exhausted yesterday so only made a little progress on it.
I don’t know if I mentioned that Jessica and Ciera (my granddaughter) went to Japan and other Asian countries last month – she picked up this piece of fabric for me in Japan – this is the width – I hadn’t had time to measure it at first I thought it was a fat quarter as it was folded as one but a fat eighth maybe – I will measure after the house is empty and I put the sewing room back in order.
I will need to save the fabric label to go with it although I have no idea what it says I have no idea what to use it for – I really don’t even want to cut into it right now? use as a table runner maybe with batting and backing and maybe Sashiko stitching on it? It isn’t long enough for a scarf and a little rough texture for that.
having a dog in the house for a couple days is such a difference for us. She would be in the living room and all of a sudden make a dash for the back door barking and looking out – what did she sense was out there – we didn’t see anything – maybe a stray cat wander by or squirrel or rabbit? Yes she is a big dog – a Goldendoodle, 55 pounds – I constantly look to see where she is when I am moving around the house so I don’t trip over her although she seems to lay down and sleep a lot and when she is wander she is big enough to see!

Such pretty Japanese fabric! I agree it would make a nice table runner. Glad to hear Melanie is out of the hospital. I hope she is feeling more energetic soon.
So glad Melanie is out of the hospital, although exhausted, and hope she feels better every day. Your estimated 6000 pieces should go into some kind of quilter’s hall of fame! That is a tall dog – he looks like a hoot. 🙂 I know it’s good having relatives around, but I’m sure it will be good to get things back to normal.
Dear Karen,
Good news indeed that Melanie is at home. The Japanese fabrics are all different and so are the textures many. The slightly coarse texture fabric, was used for Kimono that was worn in warmer days in summer. A friend send me some fabric from her collection. They are all long skinny length pieces. I have never had the heart to cut them as the pattern is large and it just feels right to keep the fabric as one piece. Many fine quilt fabric is manufactured in Japan for many of the well known quilt companies. Two of my favourite ones, are Robert Kaufman and French General Fabric for Moda. Having a pet in the house is delightful and they provide an awesome blend to daily adventures.
That is a pretty pile of hexies! Thread basting them is probably the perfect thing to do while you have company and want to visit. That dog looks like such a cutie, but I would be thinking the same as you – not used to having a dog around so always on the lookout for him. Glad Melanie is out of the hospital, and hope she feels stronger soon. That’s a beautiful cross-stitch design!
Your Japanese fabric is beautiful, those colors are gorgeous. Happy to hear your girls will get to visit at your house today, instead of the hospital. That pic of the dog at the door makes me smile. I saw a meme about golden doodles really being humans dressed in dog fur. True? That’s a lot of hexies. I played with a few hexies yesterday and I can’t imagine putting 6000 of them together. Lol I’m making mine into a butterfly to appliqué onto a block of fabric. But they are really fun to make! I’m excited for your trip FOR you. Can’t wait for pics.
6000 pieces! That is overwhelming to me! That fabric from Japan is very pretty. It will be interesting to see what you do with it.
That is a pretty piece of Japanese fabric, perhaps you have a dresser or small table for it. I think sandwiching and quilting seems perfect for it.
That sounds like a great way to keep the beauty of the whole piece of fabric and use it too. Nice to hear Melanie is home. Warm wishes your way!
That Japanize fabric is really pretty. It would make a nice bag. The crewel embroidery piece that Melanie is working is really cool. Hope you both get in some handwork today.
You can install Google translator to translate the Japanese writing. The fabric width looks like what is used for making kimono
I had some Japanese fabric, narrow like that. I gave it to an old friend of mine who lived in Japan for awhile because I never could figure out what to do with it. With a large design like that one has it would be nice as a table runner or other small project with Sashiko stitching.
The other thing you could do with the narrow width Japanese fabric would be to find a coordinating solid fabric to seam on either side of the print fabric. That would give you more options.
Great pile of hexies. The Japanese fabric is beautiful
I love the photo of the pile of hexies. It is so precise and colorful. The Japanese the fabric is very pretty. I really like the piece that Melanie is working on. Goldendoodles are usually so friendly. He’s good looking.
Oh My, there is already a “zillion” hexies on Noriko’s Star a more to come. It is a work of perseverance and patience. It will be a master’s work!
Melanie embroidery is beautiful.
Things will be quieter in your home once your daughter and her dog go back home. Have fun in Paduca, there will be such a lot to see there.
It looks like your fabric could be a yukata. It sure is a pretty print!
That piece of Japanese fabric is beautiful. I’d be hesitant to cut it too! I like the table runner idea. It would be beautiful for Spring.
Melanie’s stitching is immaculate!
saludos
