Flying Pansies–Border

Finally now that the rows are together it was time to look at the border and would you believe other than telling you the size to cut there are no other instructions for the borders.  If I was a new quilter I might not really have a good idea how to do this!  The flat irons are just to hold the fabric up off the floor – the weight of it kept pulling and I needed a straight edge to work from.

After I had it held in place I was able to measure from the white points 1.5 inches which seemed good to me and get this straight all the way across with pins holding in place.

The the edges were folded under – I just eyeballed this to about what looked like a quarter inch to me and using short applique pins pinned in place.  Now I will needle turn applique – I think white thread to the white and somewhat closely colored thread in the other areas – the only problem with that is constantly changing thread so I might see if I can do it in white first and just try to hide the stitches better than I do sometimes.  (of course this could be machine stitched in applique stitch or straight stitch also)

First though I will get these rows of hexies done and get it stitched to the area of the Noriko’s Star that it goes to and get that out of the way.  I just have a couple white hexies to stitch and then the black row and it will be ready to stitch to the top.

Quilting on Scrappy Crossroads – I finished the first row all the way across and rolled it down starting on the left side last night

I am not sure what machine stitching project I will start next.  I need to look over projects already started and see where I want to pick up with those – and I have one top almost finished for several years now that I had lost interest in – The Rose Garden and I need to drag that one out and look and see what I want to do with it – I think it was left at piecing a border – but how much is left to do on it I am not sure.  I had thought to start a Christmas quilt but now I’m not sure what I want to do next – that is why I might just work on one already started for a day or two or week or more while I think about it.

I never thought about the border being appliquéd. How clever! I do love the border fabric! Your hexies are coming along and your hand quilting is beautiful!

Sounds like you have a great plan to move a UFO further along, who knows once you get it out you might be interested in it again and go ahead and finish it! Happy Turkey Day!

Your border for Flying Pansies is looking good! I often have trouble deciding what to work on next after finishing a quilt or quilt top, too. It’s good to have choices of WiPs or something new. I’ll enjoy seeing what you decide on!

I took a class once where someone said light and medium grey tended to ‘blend’ as thread for various colors. It might work on your border applique work. Good luck with selecting the next project to work on. I tend to have way too many on the in process list and the want to do list so selecting one is more of my issue!

Karen, I saw your question on Kate’s blog about when the first clue for Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery Quilt is posted. Bonnie is leaving for England on this coming Friday, so she has already released the first clue last Friday. I haven’t done her mystery quilt for several years because I wasn’t getting them finished.

Now that I see the background fabric next to the hexies, I actually like it a lot!

If the border fabric was all one color you could use that for thread color. Maybe a light green or gold would work for both the white and the prints. When I took an applique class back in the 1990s they recommended off white silk thread for applique and said it blended into every color.

Oh, that’s how you do the border. Looking forward to seeing which project you are going to work on , old or new. I’m looking at my projects and trying to decide what goes on the quilt plan for next year.
