How to Make a Circle

That is the way I make circles – I was asked to show how I make mine.  I start with a template a  mylar circle – (that link will take you to the Fat Quarter shop) I have a lot of these all different sizes some are from Karen Kay Buckley and some of what I have are parts included in patterns.  I have 3 different packages of circles gathered up from the years with very tiny to large.   I trace around the template and then cut larger than needed.  I use my hand quilting thread and baste in a circle about a quarter inch away from the drawn line.

Pull your thread tight around the template and give it a good pressing front and back with a hot iron – I give it a shot of spray starch too.

Let it cool off slightly and loosen it a little and take the template out and then tighten the thread back up and give it another pressing to hold in place it is then ready to pin in place or glue in place whichever you wish to do.

I had mine ready to applique in place after I had the whole piece stitched.

And the piece was done in the afternoon

Now the bottom row going across needs to be finished.  Everything is pinned to the wall right now in case I want to move any blocks around – the orange stays in the middle for sure as that circle is larger than the others.

I still need to make two more of the star points like the one just finished and the two larger circle stars after that I still need to make 28 small star circles which are scattered about and on the outside border which is still to be made.  The smaller circles to make are the same size as the center circle in each block.

While all that sewing was going on I had a loaf of pumpkin yeast bread in the machine and I was listening to a book –  it is called “The Second Gentleman” and it is by Bill Clinton and James Patterson

Quilting on New York Beauty went well on Saturday night – this section took two nights to do.  I think it will take about a week to finish.

Thank you for that info on circles! Your process is really neat. Those circles of color give Georgetown a really fun look.
Do you use the pumpkin bread for sandwiches and toast? I’d be happy to test it for you with a stick of butter.
We are still in the low 90s during the day with higher expected later this week. I’ve had to water my garden twice.

Thanks for letting me know how you make your circles. I’ve tried numerous other methods that result in circles that result in too much fabric on top because of the thickness of the template. That pumpkin bread sure looks good!

I like the circle templates. You could pull the string tighter and make yo yo’s. I have the clover yo yo makers and think they are fun. Your bread is beautiful!

Those mylar circles in different sizes are very handy especially if you do a lot of applique! I always like seeing how quilters construct various parts of their quilts. Yummy bread, too! I have that book on my library hold list – I really liked the first one. Looking forward to reading this next one!

Are you getting giddy at finishing NYB so you can get a new one on the frame. I like your method of making a circle, similar to making yoyo’s.

Thank you for the circle tutorial. I can’t wait to make some using your method–mine often have a few tiny ‘points’!

I’m sure it is easier to pop out the mylar with the hole in the center. That is the method I have used too on the very few projects I have done with circles.
Are you enjoying that book? It is one I considered reading.

Great job on the circle tutorial. I love that way of doing it for precision!

I make cardboard circles. They bend nice and like plastic can be used again. I had a lot for my Baltimore Album. Lots of cherries and berries. Almost done NYB eh? Got about half my blocks done. Good day to lay around. With humidity it’s 105.8!! and we don’t have AC.

Karen, desde un tiempo no puedo entrar en tu blog.
Hoy lo intente desde Instagran y funciono muy bien.
Utilizo círculos de carton, tu pan se ve delicioso
    Cuidate del calor

Thank you for the circle tutorial! I will keep it in mind if I ever need to make some. Progress on Georgetown, the star points are such fun blocks. Your pumpkin bread look yummy.
