A Finish

I started out the rainy day making the last two borders for Silent Night.  I laid them on the frame, too a break and then came back to sew one of them on.

And then got the other one on – now a finished top – now should I leave as is or embroidery some eyes on Santa – he looks kind of blank but I don’t know if I want to bother with it. Does the empty face stand out? One thing I didn’t notice until now looking at the photo was I was supposed to add a narrow fabric strip of background fabric in the area above Santa’s head and I forgot when I put it together because it all measured right!! it kind of looks like the tree is growing out of his head LOL – maybe I will applique a narrow strip above his head.  I need to stay stitch the outer edges.  I was going to try to machine quilt it but I know it would take a lot of breaks to do so this one is getting put in the basket to hand quilt and it will be done for next years holidays instead.  The quilt ended at 67.5 x 82.5.  Linking to Jennifer’s Wednesday Wait Loss #456

I worked on getting all the papers out of Noriko’s Star that had been left on the outside edge so all the papers are out of it before I cut it straight and sew around it.  I do believe this quilt will go on the frame when The Rose Garden comes off of it in a couple weeks.  I have a backing for it, thread and batting  – it is jumping the line and the other six or however many there are will wait.  I am not even sure how many or what size quilts I have in the box right now – I know I have several 2-4 small ones (small for me lap size) I have a queen size log cabin in there, and maybe one or two that are about 80″ square?  I’m really not sure.

All of those papers got tossed they were worn out – the trash can had been about two thirds full now it was pretty much full.

Quilting went quickly on Monday night although I do admit to sitting for an hour working on it and yes I was stiff when I got up but I wanted to get to the border area to work on last night and I did.

I think next up will probably be a scrap quilt using some foundation papers that I have it is a courthouse steps pattern.  I had bought two tablets from the Fat Quarter Shop in my last two orders to them to tip the balance to free shipping – they make 4″ squares and there are 84 total papers – the strips are under an inch in width.  Something to play with while I decide on anything else.  I will be starting a new EPP quilt soon too but I want to get everything done on Noriko’s Star first to get it ready for quilting and then I will share the design.  Today I need to measure the backing that I have for the flannel quilt to make sure there is enough as the quilt turned out slightly larger than planned and cut the binding to put with it.

I am surprised you are starting another EPP so soon, I thought perhaps you would be tired of those for a while:0. As for Santa, if you hadn’t said anything I probably wouldn’t notice.

Dear Karen, Wow, so many projects! Maybe buttons for Santa’s eyes after you have quilted it? Some white furry fabric or even very wide white Rick rack or trim that you can sew on to his hat between him and the tree? Christmas is less than ten weeks away. The year has flown by so quickly. Have a wonderful day.

Silent Night looks beautiful. It sure went together quickly. I will let my Santa tell me if he wants eyes. ;D
I’m so excited to see Noriko’s Star on your frame!
This morning we are taking the stray dog to another lady who wants her. She has a special needs 33-yo daughter who wants her to sleep on her bed. 🙂 The dog actually stayed in her house a few hours one morning, the day after we had to leave her outside while we went to get the grands. She decided to walk all over town again, and this lady spotted her and took her inside. After we took her to our house, she told me she might like to have her if the owner wasn’t found. So the dog’s owner apparently doesn’t want to be found, and she still wants her. I am frankly very relieved, and Hubs is OK with it but he is sad. He has gotten very attached to her. I hope to get back to our real life today – lol!

I think Santa’s hat is positioned low enough on his head that he can do without eyes.

I think Santa without eyes kind of reflects the modern look of the whole quilt! A small appliqued piece of background to separate Santa from the tree above would work, too. I really like the green border! It will be fun to see what you decide to work on next!

I think it is pretty common to have blank faced Santas in pieced quilts. If you add eyes, it becomes a focal point on the quilt, especially if they don’t turn out well. You are coming to a lot of finishes at once, and a few starts too. An exciting time.

I agree with the no eyes for Santa. I did notice that the tree was growing out of Santa’s hat but didn’t say anything….nor did I look back at the pattern to see what it looked like. I’m not sure I’d bother adding anything to separate it as it would change the proportions compared to the other trees. I’m glad Noriko’s star is jumping the quilting line. It’s too amazing not to keep going on it.

Wow, you have been busy. I’d skip the eyes on the Santa but I would applique a tiny piece of background above the head to separate the head from the tree. You are such an inspiration.

I was so hoping that Noriko’s Star would be next up for quilting!

Congratulations on these finishes! I think a tiny strip of background above Santa’s hat would be good, but as people said, no need for eyes. If that bothers you, you can always quilt eyes in to keep them subtle. I can’t wait til you start quilting Noriko’s Star – it should be amazing.

Silent Night is such a pretty quilt! Santa looks good to me. I look forward to seeing Noriko’s Star on the frame! How exciting!

Santa’s face looks fine as is. Also, i didn’t notice the tree above Santa’s head until you mentioned it. You could leave it alone, or try quilting that area a bit differently?! I am looking forward to seeing how you quilt Noriko’s Star.

Silent Night turned out nicely, the green brick border was a perfect addition. You are so close to finishing up what you’ve been working on. Is the plan to use Noriko’s Star on your bed when it’s all quilted?
