I’m surprised it is taking me so long to get this block done but it is that time of year for going in and out, trying to do some outside work and then a break and in sewing, reading and housework.
This block is in shades of purple, burgundy and blue. A little more to do to finish – I think I can get it done and ready for applique today.
I’ve been asked what makes the Lori Holt rulers special – a square ruler is a square ruler. Well I like the mark on them for lining up angles mainly – the regular square rulers have so many lines on them – maybe it is my eyes? I have trouble focusing on what line to line them up on sometimes for cutting. Here is the 4″ ruler. Around the outer edge is coated in blue and not tacky I don’t know how you word it – not rough but it stays put. I like the dark lines for lining up your block.
Here it is on the purple block to trim it to exactly 4 inches. The ruler sets are called “Trim-It” sorry the lights are reflecting on it. I’m not connected to the rulers – I found them on Amazon but they are sold at a variety of places like Fat Quarter Shop and maybe others.
Next up is Honey, Honey with the three reds in the corner two I got from two etsy shops with two more pieces coming today – the one in the middle is the one I found in the brown scrap piles. I will be adding the red all over the place now that I have them. Linking to Alycia’s Friday link
I am on the last unit for the Jigsaw Puzzle! The beige on the left.
Noriko’s Star from Wednesday night – before I forget I’ve been having several say how are you going to quilt the Broken Star Log cabin with all those seams – well I’ve got more seams in this quilt and it is going just fine! You just take that into consideration when you decide how to quilt it.
Work on the garden – the two beds are now ready for the tomatoes around the edge of these beds I might put some basil and rosemary. I think I have 10 or 11 tomato plants – I noticed one pot has two growing in it – that would probably bee too much for in here but four in each with herbs & marigolds maybe will be ok. I will stick the extra plants over by the blueberry’s that haven’t gotten all that big. I’ve got a lot of mulch work to do to hold down the dirt and keep the weeds at bay – I noticed the strawberry beds are full of weeds I will need to be pulling weeds as I pick berries. We will wait now and get a couple more of these metal beds in the late summer and transplant strawberries into the tomato beds which will be done by then and then remove two beds that have rotten frames – and round and round we go until the whole thing is metal beds that I can sit next to to pick and weed (should keep more weeds out too.
Speaking of berries I have a lot of strawberries getting a hint of red on them, I wonder how red they will be in a week or so?
The iris’s are starting to open – only one right now but I have seen several other areas with buds. It seems like spring got here awfully early! And yes more trees to pull out or dig out here too – one old flower bed has at least 30 trees in it right now that need to be removed, several under the bird feeders are two to three feet tall!!

Your mercantile block is going to be pretty! I have to say, I like the addition of the red tones to honey, honey. Those are beautiful shades of red, and it will contribute a lot of interest. We had a 95% chance of rain yesterday, and it did rain in the afternoon, but only sprinkled for a few minutes. We really need more moisture. I am already watering the flower beds.
Love those Honey blocks, looks like they are small enough to be portable too.
I was curious about those rulers and am glad you explained them. They look like the would be a really helpful tool. We have chances for rain for the next few days. Here’s hoping!
That is a handy looking ruler – I had to compare it to my 4.5 inch ruler to see how it was different. The diagonal lines going both directions do look helpful. Those new reds are definitely going to be pretty in the Honey, Honey blocks! We just started our spring yard and garden clean-up yesterday. Lots more to do!
The trees, oh, I remember there were always trees sprouting in our flower beds at our former house. If you don’t pull them quickly, they are hard to dig up! Your metal beds look so nice!
I like those Merc block colors. The red fabrics for Honey Honey will look great. You’ll have strawberries before you know it! Since you are making your garden in the tubs, do you have any grass/weeds trying to grow on the ground?
I know I said I wouldn’t have a garden this year, but I do. I got it all done yesterday. I need to find some natural mulch for the tomatoes to keep rain from splashing up on them this weekend. Guess I could drive to your house and load up! 😉
I like the combination of colors in the Mercantile block. The red Wm. Morris are pretty too.
I was just reading a website about the 15 best tomato companion plants and was surprised by a couple of them. I usually have marigolds but last year didn’t get the seeds in the ground early enough.
That will be nice to have the strawberries up high, easier to take care of.
I can see why you are drawn to that line of rulers. Next time I am in the market to replace a ruler or three, these are likely to be my go to. Your EPP and quilting are as impeccable as always. Such fun to watch your quilts grow.
You picked a great combo of fabrics for your most recent Mercantile block, very pretty. Did you get any of the storms yesterday? We got rained on hard for just a bit on our way to Tulsa.
Oh I really like that block you are making!!
