I know I will sound like a broken record by the end of the week but the humidity is awful. Walking out of an air condition house causes your glasses to fog up! A short heavy rain shower and dripping other parts of the day. I got the quilt out before the heavy rain shower to get a photo of Mercantile Sampler laying out. I had completely forgot when I showed it yesterday and said it was done that there is supposed to be a 2 inch border of white around it! Does it need it or not? I’m tempted not to – I’m kind of tired and done with it. Does it look finished enough? Linking to Alycia’s Finished or Not – edited: I decided to add the narrow binding after all so the points won’t get chopped off.
I was going to get the Flowering Snowball pieces cut yesterday but I didn’t. I did pull out pastels. She said any color of pastels. The darker blue needs to be pulled out and maybe the one next to it that is pink/blue. I realized I don’t have a lot of pastels. I will look again and see if there are any more in other boxes – I didn’t check the yellow and there might be some mixed in with purples.
Finally remembered to change out table runners to summer colors. The pot and plant are from Mike for our anniversary he had Melanie run to a plant store and pick something out. The plant is too small for this pot – I might put a different plant in it or pot this one into something a little higher and insert it into the pot.
The plant from above it is called an “Indian Staghorn” it is common to China and India. The plant can reach 2 feet with a span of 2-3 feet.
Log Cabin quilting from Wednesday night
And half of this area
The Tiger Lilies are growing and opening even more. My brother (the farmer) and sister in law stopped by last night to see how we were doing and placed interest in them and left with a bunch of the little black seeds and I will try to get them some bulbs in the fall from them in case the seed pods don’t grow.
We had a visit from the PT guy early in the day to see how Mike was doing and what care is needed for PT — set up to start next week.

Humidity like that does make it hard to want to do anything outdoors! We’ve had some rain the last few days which has raised our humidity, too, and it makes me miserable. Mercantile is a beauty! I can see why the designer would call for a final outer white border, but if you’re ready to be done with it, I say do what appeals to you! That planter with the cat is adorable!
The heat and humidity can be stifling at this time of year. I try to work in the yard, but I can only last a short time before I have to come in and cool off. I don’t think you need another border on your quilt if you don’t want to add one. My only issue is when I have those points ending a quarter inch from the edge, I have to be more careful with trimming and adding the binding, but it is all up to what you want to do.
Michigan is getting the high temps and humidity next week and I’m not looking forward to it. I like that plant. I have put something into the bottom of a pot to raise a planted plant so it’s not so low. A canning jar ring, upside down lids, really anything that is flat and will fit into the container will raise a planted plant up high enough for the container. Hope that makes sense.
Hi Karen, I would put the white border on. If not, you may run the risk of cutting off the points on that border when you put the binding on.
Hope Mike is recovering well and glad he is home.
I think the quilt looks finished as it is and the only reason to add the white border is to preserve the points when adding the binding, so if you either don’t think you’ll cut them off or don’t care, I’d call it done. We are due for all that heat in a day or two. I really hate when it’s so humid my glasses fog up!
Maybe you do need to add that border to protect the points? But since you are feeling over it, maybe call it finished now. Decisions, decisions!
If you trim a tiny bit beyond the edge of the quilt, that will leave enough seam allowance for the binding without covering up the points. You just have to keep reminding yourself as you are trimming.
That humidity is going to start creeping in here soon. By Sunday I’ll have to have the A/C on. Today only got up to 68 so it’s hard to believe it will be 90 by Monday.
Mercantile is beautiful as it is, Karen. Personally I had not added the white border. If you feel you are done with it, leave it as it is and decide on that border later. I love your planter with the cat, so cute! I believe the Staghorn fern is the same as grow wild here. We have one on a palm (small seeds? seem to pop up on other trees and grow), they become monsters! I’ll try to remember to take a photo and post on my next blog post. I don’t envy you the high humidity! We are off it for some months now.
I feel for you with the humidity, we are supposed to have it starting Monday, yuck!
Mercantile turned out beautifully! The humidity this year has not been fun at all. My Guy hasn’t been able to do much outside as we keep getting rain. Hopefully, it will get easier to get out in the mornings to make progress in the garden.
The air here has been humid as well, and I am a broken record complaining about it. It is impossible to be outside, even in the very early morning as I usually like to do. Temps will hit 90s this week, and make it even more miserable. We desperately need rain, but all we get is a little shower that leaves the air thick, but doesn’t give the ground the moisture it needs.
Our windows were full of condensation this morning – this week is going to be a hot one here. Your blocks and projects look great! Hope it all goes well at PT for Mike.
Yep, it’s summer in the South! Miserable, but better than Winter in the North!
I think it looks great – the little border on the edge finishes it just perfect for quilting and binding!! GO yoU!!
