The last two borders are now sewn together except for the corner units – I need to select fabric for that and cut them still but at least it is progress made on the Mercantile Sampler I can truthfully say – almost done!!
On the Broken Star Log Cabin on Friday night I got the quilting done to the end of the row. Linking to Kate’s Life in Pieces and Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching.
And then I rolled it down again – where the notebook is sitting the top of the paper is where the halfway point is for the quilt.
You can see that better here
Yesterday morning I got a little work done in the garden while this part was still mainly in the shade and got landscaping cloth tacked down to control the weeds – the rain goes through it. I still have more to do but at least one section is done. Mike will not be able to do anymore work in the garden this year for the pathways he was making to control the weeds – maybe this winter if it is mild, we will see. Still plenty of grass to pull out but this is a start. I will try to do a little bit each morning if I can.
Picked more tomatoes and I found the insecticide to get rid of the tomato hornworm I will work on that over the next couple days if it doesn’t rain. I pulled out the zucchini and the green beans they were not cooperating and producing anything – the cantaloupe go next if they don’t start to grow and produce. I have a couple small cucumbers but they aren’t doing much either. I seem able to only grow tomatoes and strawberries.

Your log cabin quilting is looking great. The mercantile top will soon be done too. It won’t be long until you will need to make another batch of sauce.
Those hornworms are the creepiest! I don’t see them often but then I don’t grow many tomatoes. It’s not worth doing in pots, I’ve found.
Your log cabin quilt is looking great. I am almost finished machine quilting my modern Dear Jane. We are heading to Colorado today to see Mom who isn’t doing well but turning 104 on Saturday. So I’m hoping to get back to Jane in another week or so. It’s taken 3 years to get to this point, so I am anxious to finish.
You are, indeed, almost finished with the Mercantile top. I wonder why you can grow tomatoes but not zucchini or cucumbers. Good luck with your hornworm irradiation. I just looked them up and the hornworm moths are large but not super attractive either.
Those hornworms are such pests! I hope you can get rid of them before they do too much damage. Halfway done on the broken star quilt is quite an accomplishment. If I remember correctly, it was quite large.
Mercantile will have its borders on before you know it! I’m sorry some of your garden plants aren’t producing – we have had the same problem here over the years, but keep trying anyway. You definitely do hit the jackpot on strawberries and tomatoes! Have a great Sunday, Karen!
I noticed how many strawberry plants you have there, wow! Nice work on both your sewing and getting some cloth down in your garden. Gardening is hard work. We need to get something up for the peas to climb on.
I saw more bees early in the season than I’m seeing now so I’m wondering if I will have any cucumbers. There are plenty of male blooms and a few female blooms, they just need to get together and party.
Great progress on both quilts.
I’m excited to see your completed Merc! Is your notebook where you keep track of your quilting? Or everything?
I am LOL over Wanda’s comment! Well hey, you do have really great success with two things, and you keep trying on others, so that’s a win in my book! I keep trying on green beans too – some years I get a couple messes. I only had success in one garden with cukes in 1999. My kids still talk about the dill pickles and pickle relish I made that year. I’ve had maybe 1/2 dozen cantaloupes and small watermelons. Strawberries – very few ever picked. Blueberries – if I could get at them before the birds, I’d get some nice handfuls, not enough to freeze. Squash almost always gets mildew. Radishes do pretty well. Carrots – nada. Flowers, tomatoes, a few herbs, and a fair amount of success with peppers are what keep me going!!
Your log cabin quilt is looking so good, you really are a hand quilting Queen!
Yea for halfway done with the log cabin. It’s looking good. Sorry the garden isn’t producing as you hoped. I love a homegrown tomato but we don’t have room for a veggie garden, nor do we want the work of it. Sigh. Hope you have great success with the tomatoes and strawberries though.
I know I am a broken record commenting the same things every time. I am just amazed by you! Your garden is a paradise, your quilts are beautiful and I am just blown away every time I get distracted for a few weeks, then come back to the internet and see how much you accomplished while I was AWOL from quilting blogs! 🙂
A little bit every day is the best way to tackle such a big job. Sorry not all your plants are doing well. Looking forward to seeing Mercantile as a finished quilt top.
For someone with so little time, you are making great progress on both of your quilts!
