How a Hexie Grows

Hexies multiple like rabbits did you know!  you attach one and another and another and before you know it you have a diamond.  Yesterday morning it was so pleasant I brought my hexies and audio book to the porch and relaxed – I don’t have my book blasting in my ears – just low to listen to and I can still hear the birds and the bugs too.

First I needed to thread baste more neutrals.

Then the stitching started

My EPP tools – light gray and white thread – I like YLI hand quilting thread for this but I’m sure there are favorites among all of us – I use my Roxanne applique needles for hexies and need my threader for them.

and the diamond started to take shape

Ready for the neutral hexies – today for Slow Sunday Stitching that will be done!  It is not uncommon for some of your stitches to show – don’t worry about it unless you want it perfect for a show quilt – once it is washed and dried it will barely be noticeable to you or anyone else.  I must not have pulled my thread as tight in that one section where you can see it – I will watch out for that.  Also linking to Life In Pieces Quilting is More Fun than Housework

And see how pretty and neat the back is – by having the hexies cut on the die cutter it leaves the seams perfect and no trimming is necessary

Sounds like a great place to enjoy some stitches!

and it was so nice outside – low humidity and around 80 – then of course it jumped to 86 and I came back in the house 🙂

That does sound like a lovely morning! Your red hexies are pretty – I love their deep color. The place where your stitches show a bit looks like some of the places on my tablerunner – not terrible but something I’m hoping to get better at! Enjoy your day, Karen!

yes the stitches that show just means you are enjoying yourself – really just pull the thread a little tighter and see if that helps

When you baste your hexies, how do you keep the template from shifting? I have a little trouble with that, so I’m curious. Your seam allowances all look so even.

you can put a spot of glue from a stick in the middle of the paper and stick it to your fabric, use a pin, or a clip after awhile I mainly just hold it in place with my fingers, the seams aren’t always even – just happened for that photo 🙂

My hexies don’t grow quite as quickly, but I’ve gotten pretty lax. I haven’t stopped long enough to sit outside and slow stitch yet this year. Maybe today’s the day. I have a nagging 3 day old low grade migraine and it’s a glorious day.

    • Karen Sep 1, 2019 @ 10:49

hope the migraine goes away Karen! I finished that diamond I show this morning while Melanie was visiting, we were on the porch chatting and she was doing cross stitch and I was working on my diamond – helped I had it all thread basted.

Hexies and EPP make for a great sitting on the porch project. I must try listening to a book.

    • Karen Sep 1, 2019 @ 15:06

I used to listen to music but then changed to audio books and really like them

What a lovely morning! Thanks for showing how you handle the stitching for the hexies. I will remember it. Who knows, there may be hexies in my furture!

I love the little words/phrases on your EPP hexie papers!
I should sit outside sometimes to do my hand piecing… We have some sun in the mornings on our deck, but some nice shade late in the afternoons, so I will have to give it a try!!
We are waiting to see what Hurricane Dorian will do if/when it affects Virginia. Right now we are at our beach house in North Carolina, where it is a waiting game as well. We will head home after we have secured everything, probably on Wednesday…..
Positive thoughts going out to all your readers who might be in the storm’s path…. This is a nasty one!!

    • Karen Sep 1, 2019 @ 20:16

hope your North Carolina home comes through just fine. Good you were able to go secure it. Yes give stitching on the porch a try – I love it.

Sounds lovely and relaxing. I’m now sure my EPP multiplies like rabbits, but it made me laugh!

    • Karen Sep 2, 2019 @ 7:42

sometimes they can grow pretty fast!!

  • Kate Sep 3, 2019 @ 5:39

My EPP projects are more like sloths then rabbits. Sounds like you had a very relaxing week of hand stitching.

    • Karen Sep 3, 2019 @ 7:14

after I made that statement I heard from others that say they are slow or like you say a sloth LOL I guess we just all go at it differently 🙂

  • Constance Horne Sep 3, 2019 @ 11:42

Do you leave your basting stitches in or do you take them out? When do you remove the papers?

    • Karen Sep 3, 2019 @ 12:42

when thread basting on the back only I leave them in – no reason to take them out – the papers pop out easily with them in place
