Rose Garden More Patchwork

I have not decided how I am going to finish this quilt off yet so I posted two versions for me so I can keep track of how it looks – but more patchwork is done.

I’m estimating right now – rough measurements for this version would be about 72 x 96 depends on finishing off strip around the quilt in the red strip.

Or with an additional border – this version would be about 96 x 96 making it a good bed size.  I’m not sure why some are amazed at the size – don’t you ever make big queen size quilt with plenty of overhang?  I have always made them big like this – I really don’t use little couch size quilts much.  I’m not much for wrapping up in a quilt in the daytime or evening and really don’t need them.  A bed size quilt I would use.  When I get done with the patchwork needed for the top border of this one I should be able to estimate if I have enough fabric left to continue on making it large like this without buying more fabric from one of the sites I found that still sell it.

I did barely any quilting on Friday night – I had cut my thumb close to the side of the nail yesterday and with a band-aide on it and freshly cut I couldn’t use my thumb much – yes I use my thumb for quilting – last night it felt much better and I removed the band aide so I could use my thumb better seeing as there was no bleeding – I will soon see if it is good enough to use.  Linking to Life In Pieces for 15 minutes of stitches –

I don’t make huge queen size quilts, mainly because I machine quilt on my domestic sewing machine and it would be really difficult! Not sure how big the one is I’m finishing today, I will measure it. I wonder which version of quilt you will go for? Hope your cut thumb allows you plenty of quilting today.

I like the second picture version of the quilt the best, but I can’t figure out why. Lol why can’t the corner squares work with the patchwork border, just like it is in the first pic? But my eye does like the extra border version the best. Sorry about cutting your thumb. My husband had to take a trip to urgent care this week for a cut finger. No fun! Enjoy your Sunday!

Like Sarah in her comment above, I don’t make queen sized quilts because I have no way to quilt them and it’s too hard for me to drag all that fabric around. We do use lap sized quilts daily around here and even use them on the beds in various layers. I admire your large quilts, but am happy with the size I make, too!

I’m having a hard time deciding which version of Rose Garden I like best. I was thinking I really liked the second version, but now that you’ve got more of the next border done, I think I like the first version best. You can’t go wrong with either version. I don’t use a lot of bed quilts, so I make mostly throw size. That’s what my family mostly uses.

I like the first version better. It is a good size for gifting to nieces or nephews who might be getting married. I never give bed size quilts to newlyweds because they have their own ideas about decorating their bedroom.

Karen, I really like the 2nd version of your Rose Garden. The 1st version is nice too but seems a bit narrow to me – lol. I’m like you, most of my quilts are queen size and I too hand quilt them. Of course, if the quilt won’t fit on my frame I do send it out to my longarmer friend.

Ouch! Thumb cuts can be painful. Most of my most recent quilts have been wall hanging or throw size. I guess it’s just that need for instant gratification. I tried to open your post yesterday several times and kept getting an error message. I assume the project was something going on at my end since no one else has mentioned it. No problems opening it today.

That is going to be a beautiful quilt whether narrower or wider. I have a big queen currently on the bed — feels great during winter. But in the summer I have a quilt that doesn’t go far down on the sides. Generally, it’s folded up at the bottom when we’re sleeping — just too hot for a quilt then. And, ouch on the thumb. That is no fun at all. Hope it is better and you’re back to quilting.

Glad your thumb got better for quilting! I don’t make bed sized quilts, because even with a longarm I have to shift it several times and line it up again. But I have plans to make us a bed sized quilt for this year!
